Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss
Salem Hospital offers gastric sleeve weight loss surgery.
The Weight Loss Surgery program at Salem Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham, provides North Shore residents with a full range of options for weight loss treatment, including gastric sleeve weight loss procedures.
Gastric sleeve weight loss surgery is an option for patients with clinically severe obesity. In a gastric sleeve weight loss procedure, surgeons remove more than 85 percent of the stomach, leaving only a banana-shaped sleeve connected to the intestines. The gastric sleeve procedure greatly restricts the amount of food a patient can eat, helpful to achieving significant weight loss.
Advantages of gastric sleeve weight loss surgery.
Weight loss after a gastric sleeve procedure happens more quickly than with a gastric band procedure, but not as rapidly as with gastric bypass surgery.
Gastric sleeve surgery eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces the hormones that cause hunger, and as a result patients may experience fewer cravings and have an easier time controlling their appetite than with a gastric band procedure.
However, because it does not affect the way calories and nutrients are absorbed, gastric sleeve weight loss surgery tends to cause fewer long-term nutritional issues than gastric bypass surgery.
Salem Hospital's weight loss surgery program: decades of patient successes.
Our Weight Loss Surgery program has helped hundreds of patients achieve and sustain significant weight loss over the last twenty two years. Performing 2600 procedures each year, including many gastric sleeve weight loss surgeries, we are the largest and most successful surgical weight loss program on the North Shore.
Our success rate is a result both of the excellence of our surgeons and our pre- and post-operative support programs. Prior to gastric sleeve or any weight loss procedure, patients undergo a thorough evaluation process and are active participants in helping to select the procedure that will help them best reach their goals.
After surgery, we support patients with nutritional counseling, exercise programs, general education, and medically supervised cardiac risk reduction to help them continue and sustain their weight loss in a healthy way.
Additional medical care available
North Shore residents can seek cardiac ablation surgery, hyperhidrosis surgery and spinal stenosis treatment, or consult with breast cancer surgeons – all at convenient locations close to home or business.
