  • This track offers in-person groups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and virtual groups on Tuesdays and Fridays. Our program offers intensive support five days a week for individuals who need more structure and clinical care than an outpatient setting, for treatment of psychiatric or dual diagnosis issues. In order to support a therapeutic environment we are a sober program.   • It will work, but you have to stick with the program in order to be successful.” The program to which Marc refers is NSMC’s Weight Management Program and it provides intensive pre- and post-operative support for all of its patients. Support takes the form of regular meetings with the surgeons and other medical staff, as well as clinical support with nutrition, exercise and overall motivation. Peer support groups are also provided on a bi-monthly basis. While he gives a lot of credit for his healthy new body to his team at NSMC, Marc is most thankful for the support his wife of seven years has given him throughout this journey. “I’ve been a big guy all my life. In the beginning, there were times when I was ready to quit, but I didn’t, thanks to my wife,” he says. “In order to be successful, your home life has to be supportive of the surgery.”

  • We provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment and individualized treatment to stabilize and support adolescents and their families during times of psychiatric crisis. Group therapy focusing on coping skills to help better manage symptoms. This includes specific groups in illness management, relapse prevention, and both dialectical behavior and cognitive behavioral therapies Workshops and support groups through the Behavioral Health Family Resource Center may also be suggested. Readmission can be arranged through standard referral procedures to help with recurrent symptoms and additional support as needed.

The group, facilitated by Cancer Center social worker Mary Anne Macaulay, is called SPOHNC pronounced ‘sponk’ which stands for Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancers. “Head and neck cancers are some of the more challenging forms of the disease,” Macaulay said. “Our patients often have difficulty swallowing because radiation can be so harsh. Doucette is grateful for the help and understanding he received from his employer, the staff at the Cancer Center and North Shore Medical Center, and the members of his support group. His most cherished support came from his girlfriend and daughters, as well as his ex-wife.

  • She is also relying on the support the group atmosphere provides. “We are all on the journey to becoming healthier people together and we are all there to help one another,” said O’Donnell. During these group sessions, participants have a confidential weigh-in and they share struggles and success stories as well as exercises and healthy recipes they have tried. “It’s typical for many program graduates to return for a second or a third session,” said Moore. “They’re very supportive of each other and when they complete the program they miss that support.” The support I get from the other group members in LEARN and the support from a trainer really keeps me going,” said O’Donnell. “Sometimes it is a challenge to get to the gym, but I am in this for the long run and the more active I stay, the better I feel.”

  • The Diabetes Management Program consists of four group classes and one follow up class. At the first group a nurse discussed the medical aspects of diabetes as well as the typical feelings most patients have when they are diagnosed. Kim’s father also has diabetes and she has introduced him to the support group to help him with his diabetes management. She currently participates in the Diabetes Management Center’s e-mail newsletter and attends the diabetes support group at NSMC Union Hospital on the third Thursday of each month.
