Youth, Community and Employee programs
Salem Hospital Workforce Development, a division of Human Resources, is committed to ensuring a highly qualified and diverse pipeline of health care professionals, while providing economic opportunity within the communities we serve. Our mission is to help individuals explore and pursue health care careers as well as to broaden their skills and continue to grow personally and professionally. Our efforts are focused on three main channels: programs for youth, described below, programs for community residents, and programs for current employees.
We are committed to providing high school students in our communities with meaningful employment opportunities that provide awareness, exploration and immersion in clinical and non-clinical health care related careers, that influence and expand their education and career pathways.
Virtual Summer Jobs Program

In 2020 we offered a Virtual Summer Jobs Program for youth from Salem and Lynn; in previous years this was an in-person program but due to COVID-19 we moved it to be virtual). The program is open to young people aged 15 – 19 years old. The virtual program is an online work and learning experience that will include career exploration, workforce and employable skills training, and an up-close look at clinical and non-clinical careers within health care. Upon completion of this program, participants will have earned 3 dual enrollment college credits through the partnership with NSCC. This program is supported by a partnership between Salem Hospital, North Shore Community College and MassHire of the North Shore.
STEM Internship Program
We will be launching a virtual STEM Internship Program beginning late October, early November 2020. Established in 2019, through the Albright Read Institute, we have partnered with Salem Public Schools to provide 20 high school students with a paid 10-week internship. The Internship Program, supports STEM related career awareness and exploration, in combination with career readiness and employable skill building. Students rotate through eight clinical units, such as; Birthplace, Central Sterile, Surgical Services and Special Care Nursery, as well as participate in clinical and non-clinical career speaker series, resume writing workshops and mock interview day.
Health Assisting Co-Op
Currently paused due to the pandemic. We partner with Essex North Shore Technical Agricultural & Technical School and Lynn Vocational Technical Institute to provide aspiring nursing assistants with a co-op opportunity that combines classroom-based education with practical work experience. Upon completion of academic and co-op requirements, students may sit for the certified nursing assistant exam that can lead to future educational and career pathways in healthcare.
Culinary Arts Co-Op
Currently paused due to the pandemic. We partner with Lynn Vocational Technical Institute to provide culinary arts students with a co-op opportunity that combines classroom-based education with practical work experience. Dietary staff at Salem Hospital lead students through the many aspects of a high-volume food and catering department; from food preparation, to action stations, to serving patients, the students leave with a well-rounded understanding of culinary arts in healthcare.
University Internship (non-clinical)

Salem Hospital has partnered with several universities to offer college students internships in a variety of areas within the hospital. This program affords students the opportunity to apply their college skills, translate theory into practice, and gain knowledge by being in a work setting. Students will work directly with managers and employees to see upfront how tasks, programs, and policies are observed and implemented.
We provide fall, spring and summer internship opportunities. This program is usually attached to expectations of hours to meet a credit component of their education.
Students will receive an overview of the hospitals structure, culture, and skills needed. They will observe and practice professionalism, effective communication skills, shared problem solving and decision-making, faced with ethical challenges, and conflict resolution within this setting.
This program is project-based where a student will have the opportunity to learn a unit/program within the hospital and provide feedback upon completing the internship. They will share what they have learned and provide details of areas we may consider reviewing upon their recommendations.
Students will exercise critical thinking, and teamwork skills and demonstrate the ability to carry through an initiative. We have offered opportunities in the following areas: Human Resources, Quality and Patient Safely, Business Operations, Revenue Department, Radiology, Patient Access Services/ER, Marketing, and more. We are very excited in continuing to enrich students understanding of the health care industry.
