Gifts of Stock
Donating gifts of securities—appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds—as well as other property, will benefit Salem Hospital. At the same time, donating gifts of stock can offer you many benefits. As with every gift, your generosity will have a powerful impact. Gifts of stock and other securities typically entitle a donor to a federal income tax charitable deduction and capital gains tax savings for securities owned for at least a year. We encourage you to consult your own advisors to discuss your gift plans and tax implications. Instructions on making gifts of stocks or securities

Gifts from an IRA
Did you know you can use your individual retirement account (IRA) to make a difference at Salem? It’s easy and might save you on taxes.
Also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, this is a tax-wise way to support Salem Hospital.
If you’re at least 70½ years old, you can make a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA to SH and, for federal tax purposes, exclude those funds from your gross income.
Simply instruct your IRA administrator to directly transfer a gift of up to $100,000. It will count toward your required minimum distribution this year and help make expert, compassionate care close to home possible for every member of our community.
Requirements •
- You must be 70½ years or older at the time of the gift
- Your gift must go directly from your traditional IRA or Roth IRA to Salem
- You must complete a QCD (contact your IRA administrator for the necessary forms and procedures)
- A gift cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer
- Gifts must be made by December 31 to take advantage this tax year
Here’s how to make a gift with your IRA:
- Inform the institution holding your IRA that you want to make a QCD to Salem Hospital
- Complete the necessary paperwork to request the QCD
- Please direct the institution to mail checks to: Salem Hospital Development Office, 81 Highland Ave, Salem, MA 01970
- Notify Salem and let us know how you want your gift to be used
- Salem Hospital’s Federal Tax ID is 04-3399616
- Call 978-741-1242 or email us at SHgiving@mgb.org with questions.
Donor Advised Funds
Donor Advised Funds are an increasingly popular way to make a charitable gift and can provide you with immediate tax benefits while simplifying your charitable giving. Contributions are tax deductible and your investments in a DAF can appreciate tax free. You receive an immediate income tax deduction in the year you contribute to your DAF. Additionally, your DAF will not be subject to estate taxes.
With a DAF, you get both tax benefits and the flexibility to recommend gift amount and frequency to your favorite nonprofits like Salem Hospital.
Here are two simple ways you can support Salem Hospital through a DAF - you can select the option that best suits your philanthropic and financial goals.
- Make an outright gift by suggesting a grant to Salem Hospital.
- Extend your support by making Salem Hospital a beneficiary of your account or by designating Salem Hospital to receive a portion of the account value upon termination of the fund.
If you include Salem Hospital in your plans, please let us know and use our legal name and federal tax ID. To get started, contact your fund administrator to request a distribution or beneficiary form, or log into your administrator’s website to suggest a grant. Make sure to enter the amount, frequency, and designation and complete other required steps. If you include Salem Hospital in your plans, please let us know and use our legal name and federal tax ID.

How to give securities
A gift of appreciated securities supports Salem Hospital, and it may also provide you with significant tax benefits. Contributions of appreciated securities held for over a year are generally deductible at market value, regardless of what the donor paid for them; moreover, the capital gains tax is avoided through such a gift.
In order to ensure a smooth transfer, proper gift acknowledgement and designation of the gift, please contact us at 978.741.1242 at the time the transfer takes place. We will need the following information:
1. The donor's name and address
2. The name of the stock being transferred
3. The approximate number of shares being transfer
To donate a physical stock certificate, mail the unendorsed certificate(s) with a letter of instruction that specifies Salem Hospital Healthcare as the recipient and outlines the details of the contribution, as well as any particular designation.
Under separate cover , send a copy of this letter of this letter and a signed (but otherwise blank) Stock Power form for each certificate, making sure the signature corresponds exactly with the name as it appears on the face of the stock certificate. Mail all documents to the address below. The date of the gift will be determined by the later postmark of the two envelopes.
