After more than a year of construction, the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center opens today next to Union Hospital in Lynn. This 41,000-square-foot ‘medical village’ will provide a modern and convenient location for residents of Lynn and the surrounding area to access vital healthcare services in their own community.

Fused with natural light and designed for an ideal patient experience, the décor includes glass panels etched with images from the former Union Hospital Healing Garden that bring a relaxing and therapeutic feeling of nature into the new space.

Housed in the center is an expanded North Shore Physicians Group primary and specialty care practice, as well as X-ray, ultrasound and additional imaging services, blood draw/lab services and outpatient behavioral health. On the first floor and accessible through a dedicated entrance is Mass General Brigham Urgent Care, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week for minor illnesses and injuries that do not require patients to be seen at a hospital emergency department.

To provide the safest possible environment for patients, visitors and staff, all providers adhere to the Mass General Brigham Safe Care Commitment which includes universal masking, adherence to hand hygiene, appropriate distancing and rigorous cleaning.

“This beautiful facility is the culmination of a plan to provide the local community with safe, convenient, patient-friendly access to the medical services they use most,” says David J. Roberts, M.D., President of North Shore Medical Center, a member of Mass General Brigham. “It is supported by a state-of-the-art, acute care community hospital in Salem and the full spectrum of exceptional services available throughout the Mass General Brigham healthcare system. Together, these resources provide the Lynn community with extraordinary care right here on the North Shore.”

The building also reflects the new name and branding of Mass General Brigham, formerly Partners HealthCare. The new branding unifies all elements of the healthcare system under a single name that communicates a vision for truly integrated healthcare and excellence. The renaming will be extended throughout North Shore Medical Center, including Salem Hospital and North Shore Physicians Group, in the upcoming months.

The building was designed by Shepley Bulfinch and Ingenuity architects and constructed by Walsh Construction. For a virtual tour of the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center, visit nsmc.partners.org.

North Shore Physicians Group

The new healthcare center will enable the North Shore Physicians Group Lynn practice to expand and provide greater access to local patients. The practice currently includes more than 15 specialists in primary care, endocrinology, rheumatology, substance use recovery and diabetes management. With the expanded practice, plans are underway to add gastroenterology, pulmonology and cardiology specialists to the team.

The practice also offers extended hours, virtual visits and physicians who speak Spanish, Hindi, and other languages.

Mass General Brigham Urgent Care

Mass General Brigham Urgent Care in Lynn, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, will treat minor illnesses and injuries that do not require patients to be seen at a hospital emergency department.

Walk-ins are always welcome, however, patients are encouraged to check in online or by phone. Patients do not need to have an existing relationship with Mass General Brigham or its physicians to use the urgent care center. Should patients require follow-up care, they may be referred to primary or specialty care physicians.

Behavioral Health, Lab and Imaging

The healthcare center also includes an Outpatient Behavioral Health practice, which provides psychiatry and counseling services to local patients.

In addition, patients will have easy access to lab/blood testing, and imaging services such as mammography, ultrasound, bone density and X-ray. These services are moving to the new building from Union Hospital.

Redevelopment of Union Campus

The Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center has been constructed on approximately one quarter of the Union Hospital campus. The remaining 15 acres of the campus will be redeveloped by local developer and Lynn resident, David Solimine, Jr., who has shared plans to work with the City to develop senior housing on the site.

Mr. Solimine’s proposal was guided by a 2018 city-led planning process addressing the reuse of Union that included local residents, Lynn city officials, social service agencies, community groups, health advocates and NSMC. Through a series of public forums and interviews, participants reviewed redevelopment options and selected senior housing as the one most aligned with local preferences and needs. NSMC plans to turn the Union Hospital property over to Mr. Solimine by October 1, 2020.
