Salem Hospital Celebrates 150th Anniversary
Salem Hospital celebrated its 150th anniversary during a ceremony held in its main lobby Tuesday. Hospital leaders, employees, and local dignitaries - including Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo, State Senator Joan Lovely, and members of the Salem City Council - were among those in attendance for a speaking program that also featured historical banners, exhibits, and refreshments.

Beginning this fall, the North Shore Cancer WALK is joining forces with Mass General Hospital’s Everyday Amazing Race to expand the scope and scale of its fundraising program. The Race, which kicks off on the Esplanade in Boston’s Back Bay, focuses on supporting all of Mass General’s cancer centers including the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers, and will continue to support world class care in this community.
Just a few weeks ago, Dr. Thomas Mulroy, 38, was in Chiclayo, Peru, where he cared for indigenous residents in a makeshift clinic in an abandoned warehouse without modern tools or electricity. Dr. Mulroy is a North Shore Physicians Group doctor who was introduced to the volunteer program when working as an urgent care physician in New York City several years ago. “In these remote communities, we see a lot of dietary, skeletal and muscular issues. We bring what supplies and medications we can with us, but it never feels like enough. More volunteers are needed to meet people where they live and provide the care these residents need to survive."

A Swampscott cardiologist has donated his collection of antique pacemakers for display at Salem Hospital. Dr. Lawrence Block joined Lynn’s North Shore Medical Group in 1987, where he worked with Dr. Stephen Trachtenberg, one of the first cardiologists on the North Shore to implant pacemakers in patients. The devices were introduced in 1960. “Since 1960, pacemakers have become immensely smarter and more sophisticated,” Block said. “They have gone from being the size of a hockey puck, to something that resembles a double-stuff Oreo cookie and today, save millions of lives around the world every year.”
As a member of Mass General Brigham, North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) is pleased to share that it is changing its name and brand to better align with the integrated healthcare system. In the upcoming weeks, NSMC will begin transitioning the North Shore Medical Center name to Salem Hospital and adopting a new brand identity.
