Screening and Masks

To enhance the safety of patients, visitors and staff, all visitors will be screened for COVID-19 risk before being permitted to visit or accompany patients in NSMC facilities. All visitors will also be provided with a mask, which must be worn for the duration of your visit. This helps to create the safest environment possible at NSMC.

Visitor Policy Update 

  • One visitor per patient
    • Must be over 18, unless the child of the patient
    • Visiting hours are 1 - 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1- 6 p.m. Saturday/Sunday/Holidays.
  • Visitors must be screened; visitors who screen positive or suspected for COVID-19 will be asked to defer their visit to another time
  • Visitors must be masked
  • Visitors are encouraged to sanitize hands before and after visiting patients
  • Non-essential vendors, salespeople remain prohibited from visiting.
  • Visitors waiting to visit a patient should wait outside/in car and avoid congregating in waiting rooms.

After being cleared to visit, visitors should proceed directly to their destination, and leave promptly at the end of their visit. Visitors are not permitted in the hospital cafeteria.

Visitor policy exceptions remain in place; these visitors must be screened.

  • Compassionate care
  • Birth partners
  • Parents of patient under 18
  • Attorneys of patients and companions for patients with intellectual and/or physical disabilities

Patients coming in for surgery

If you are arriving at the hospital for surgery you may have one visitor who drops you off, stays with you in the waiting room until you are brought into the surgical area, and picks you up post-surgery.

All visitors will be screened and are required to wear masks at all times.

Emergency Department/Outpatient Appointment

If you are coming to the Emergency Department or coming in for an outpatient appointment, you may have one visitor to accompany you. Please note that depending on timing and capacity, and the discretion of staff, visitors may not be permitted to wait in the waiting room and/or exam room.

Davenport 4 and Children's Entrances have reopened

  • The Birthplace is open 24/7 to mothers in labor and their birth partners
  • The Emergency Department is open 24/7 to everyone
  • Our main entrance is open daily, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • The MassGeneral for Children at NSMC entrance at 57 Highland Avenue is open Monday-Friday 7 a.m. -5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m.-noon.
    • After July 28, The MassGeneral for Children entrance will be open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. -5 p.m.

Ample patient parking is available near the accessible entrances and transport personnel will be available for those who could use some assistance getting to where they are going.
