All these historical events from 150 years ago have a legacy that continues today, but there's one that stands out for the North Shore: when Salem Hospital first opened its Charter Street doors to patients on Oct. 1, 1874, thanks to a gift from Captain John Bertram. If you're a doctor or nurse at Salem Hospital, you know that you're likely to run into this patient at the grocery store or your kids will go to school together. Retired pulmonologist Jacob R. Karas, MD knows many of those clinicians, as he has trained most of them since assuming the role of the hospital's Director of Medical Education in 2001. His service to the North Shore medical community dates to the 1960s and covers a broad range between Lynn Hospital, Union Hospital and Salem Hospital.

Nathan Van Houzen, MD, cardiac electrophysist, and the cardiac catheterization lab team, successfully performed the procedure on a 57-year-old patient. The leadless system allows patients to enjoy all the benefits of a pacemaker without the restrictions of a traditional device". says Dr. Van Houzen.   • She scheduled an appointment with NSMC cardiologist Nathan Van Houzen, M.D., a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders, to discuss her options. It is often caused when a patient has an extra electrical connection between the upper and lower chambers of the heart,” explains Dr. Van Houzen. “When the extra connection is triggered, the heart races. After consulting with Dr. Van Houzen, Smith decided to have cardiac ablation to treat her condition. Cardiac ablation is a procedure used to treat a number of different heart arrhythmias that is highly successful in correcting SVT,” says Dr. Van Houzen. “During the procedure, we use catheters—long, flexible tubes inserted through a vein in the patient’s groin and threaded up to the heart—to selectively destroy the extra connection that is triggering the abnormal heart rhythm.” Performed at NSMC Salem Hospital in August of 2012, Smith’s ablation procedure took under three hours to complete and, after just one night of recovery in the hospital, she was back home.
