A series of health issues in the preceding months had complicated Casey’s pregnancy and led to several trips to the hospital for the first-time parents. She arrived first with kidney stones, then the flu, and credits the care team for helping her and Colin through. “The staff could not have been more attentive or professional,” says Casey. “To a person, they always knew exactly what was happening with my changing health, which made us feel confident and well cared for.”

Through NSMC’s collaborative breast health program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Velluto was then scheduled to have a follow-up diagnostic examination done at the Breast Health Center at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Tomosynthesis is a relatively new technology that provides a clearer, more accurate view of the breast than conventional 2-D mammography, enabling us to more effectively pinpoint the size, shape and location of many abnormalities,” says Mansi Saksena, M.B.B.S., the diagnostic breast radiologist who saw Velluto at the Breast Health Center. Catching and treating Florence’s breast cancer early, while it was small and still confined to the breast, led to a great outcome,” says her radiologist Dr. Callahan. “Her case really exemplifies the benefits of annual screenings and being proactive about your health.” The Mass General/North Shore Breast Health Center and the Breast Health Center sites at NSMC Salem Hospital, NSMC Union Hospital, NSMC Women’s Center and Cape Ann Medical Center are accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiology Control Program and the American College of Radiology.

- Dutrochet Djoko, PharmD, has served as a Salem Hospital trustee since 2022, bringing a unique perspective on health equity to the hospital. I'm also on the Mass General Brigham Trustee Committee on Health Equity and Community Health. I became a town meeting member, served for nine years on the Board of Health, and chaired the Human Rights and Inclusion Committee for five years. As a member of the Board of Health in Danvers, we had to implement some measures locally to mitigate the spread of the virus. I love the mission of Salem Hospital, which is serving the community to improve the health of the whole population.

- With World War II underway, Salem Hospital is among 10 in the state designated as a base hospital unit with doctors affiliated with the US Public Health Service, to be activated to serve the country, if needed. The Lynn Community Health Center LCHC opens on Chestnut Street to provide primary and behavioral health care services to Lynn residents, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay for care. Only a few years later, in 1976, North Shore Community Health NSCH is founded to provide comprehensive primary care services to residents, first in Peabody and eventually expanding to Salem and Gloucester. These vital organizations have grown and diversified significantly since those early days and remain a critical component of our region’s health care services network. North Shore Medical Center NSMC is incorporated and includes Salem Hospital, Union Hospital and Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital, as well as a group of affiliated physician practices.

- SALEM–Salem Hospital has received approval from the Department of Public Health to add 24 private patient rooms, netting the hospital an additional 13 medical-surgical beds, and improving the patient experience. These challenges have been fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic as well. This latest expansion comes less than two months after Salem Hospital also opened a new 16-bed Acute Mental Health Unit for adult emergency behavioral health patients – an extension of the behavioral health service in the Emergency Department.
