  • Another forum for members of the North Shore community to have a voice in the care delivery and safety programs at NSMC is the Patient Family Advisory Council PFAC. Co-chaired by Page and Ed Budelmann, a software professional from Ipswich, the 16-member committee helps NSMC fulfill a requirement established by the Department of Public Health that all healthcare organizations facilitate dialogue with patients and families in a formal manner. Being part of this group has been both an educational and eye-opening experience,” says Budelmann. “I have had a personal and professional connection to NSMC for many years and, through this group, I am still continually surprised and amazed by the complexity of healthcare today and the high quality of clinical services offered by the medical center.” Established in 2009, NSMC’s PFAC has been slowly building momentum over the past several years. Among PFAC’s upcoming plans are a series of focus groups with residents of a local retirement community to gain an additional perspective on different aspects of care at NSMC.

  • Through the decades, the Merry Mixers have provided significant support for pediatric programs and equipment at NSMC, from cardiac monitoring equipment to jaundice meters to IV pumps and isolettes. Many of us have had firsthand experience with NSMC’s pediatric services,” says Amy Weed, co-chair of the group and Marblehead mother of two boys aged 9 and 11. “We rely on NSMC to care for our children, and the hospital should be able to count on us in return.” NSMC is the primary source for pediatric care on the North Shore, including the region’s only 24-hour pediatric emergency department. This year’s event, held at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, raised $52,000 for pediatric care at NSMC. The Merry Mixers’ connection to the community is a key to their success, says co-chair Aileen Sheehan, whose mother was a nurse in the NSMC Salem Hospital emergency department.

  • As a cardiac sonographer at NSMC, Dariotis is accustomed to handling health crises. “This time it was my child in distress,” she explained, “and nothing prepares you for that.” Terrified, she called Marblehead Pediatrics, where she has taken both of her children since they were babies. Staff there directed her immediately to the pediatric emergency room at NSMC. Pediatricians at NSMC, who are also credentialed at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, were quick to order a chest X-ray and run an H1N1 test. Working at NSMC, I knew that the level of care Krista was going to receive could not be matched anywhere else.” NSMC is linked to the same secure electronic medical record system used by Mass General and other Partners HealthCare hospitals, ensuring greater communication, efficiency and safety. “It really enhances the care we can provide,” said Dr. Miller. “I was able to track Krista’s progress and connect with Mrs. Dariotis frequently to make sure she understood everything that was happening.”

  • It also gave her a new appreciation for what sets NSMC apart. A longtime participant in the North Shore Cancer WALK, Dr. Krag has always appreciated the event as a demonstration of the NSMC community spirit. The WALK is a special opportunity to connect with my patients and their families, to acknowledge their struggles and celebrate their triumphs and to remember those we’ve lost to cancer,” she says. “It’s a reminder that we’re all in this together.” Since it began in 1990, the WALK has contributed more than $19 million to support state-of the-art cancer treatment and programs at NSMC and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. Money raised will support oncology services at NSMC and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center.

  • But the Burgers have not forgotten the care team that NSMC assembled to save their daughter’s life and have taken action to support a unique stress reduction program for pre-teen patients as a way of saying thanks. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. Then the family needs to connect with a team of healthcare professionals, usually including a pediatrician, nutritionist, psychologist and psychiatrist in order to treat all aspects of anorexia.” To express their gratitude to the team that cared for their daughter, the Burgers have made a significant donation to NSMC’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. We wanted to give something to NSMC that would both honor Dr. Bailey and Dr. Prince and directly benefit other families struggling with a pre-adolescent child,” says Deborah. “The Mindfulness program seemed like the perfect fit.”

  • Since raising its first $247,000 in 1991, the Cancer WALK has become the largest single-day fundraising event on the North Shore, generating more than $20 million in support of cancer treatment and programs at NSMC and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. Through the years, proceeds from the WALK have supported construction of the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, expansion of treatment facilities at NSMC and development of resources in mammography, radiation, infusion and clinical trials. Funds raised this year will go toward the development of a new inpatient oncology unit at NSMC Salem Hospital and wellness services and support programs at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. Gagnon is also participating in honor of loved ones. “Like many people, I have been touched by cancer,” says Gagnon, senior vice president of operations at NSMC and longtime Cancer WALK participant and volunteer. “I lost several family members to the disease and know that it can leave one feeling helpless. It is good to be part of something like the WALK that enables us to take action, connect with other people and give back.” For Williamson, her experience with cancer has affected choices throughout her life.

  • Not able to ignore the pain, she went to North Shore Medical Center’s NSMC Birthplace at Salem Hospital. Immediate skin-to-skin contact with babies has been shown to establish a connection between mother and child sooner, which can improve breastfeeding outcomes. Having done her research, Cepeda knew that the bond needed to breastfeed could be harder to establish if you’re not able to connect with the baby from the beginning which made skin-to-skin contact that much more important to the nursing mom.

  • When I was President of the NSMC Medical Staff, I recognized that uniting people around a common goal creates a positive sense of community. So it means a lot to be able to give back to our community through our support of NSMC, which is an invaluable resource for all of us who live here. Through my family’s experience at NSMC and my past involvement in the WALK as part of the Gourmet Gala and the WALK Steering Committee, I’ve developed great respect and appreciation for the care NSMC delivers every day. During Karen’s treatment, the doctors and staff made a genuine connection with her and with us. As busy as life can get these days, it’s important to take stock and get behind organizations such as NSMC that make such a powerful difference for so many.

  • Dramatic Rescue: Danvers Dog Trainer Bounces Back at NSMC Salem Hospital Rochefort was rushed to NSMC Salem Hospital, immediately placed in isolation and provided with nutrients through a feeding tube. Because C. Diff can be resistant to antibiotics, physicians at NSMC used a variety of medications to treat her infection, and Rochefort eventually began to recover. She spent 16 difficult days in NSMC Salem Hospital in very serious condition, but always in good hands. “Over the course of my illness, I lost 40 pounds and was as close to death as I’ve ever been, but my care was extraordinary,” she says. Physicians like hospitalist Elvis Patel, M.D., also made it clear to Rochefort that the NSMC staff took a holistic approach to caring for her. “Dr. Patel took the time to sit and talk with me, not just about my condition, but about my life outside the hospital,” Rochefort says. “That personal connection meant the world to me.”
