  • Lopez was almost completely dilated, and despite Dr. Fagan’s efforts to slow the progression of her labor, she needed to be immediately transferred to North Shore Medical Center’s NSMC Birthplace at Salem Hospital. Considering the circumstances, it was a seamless transition and delivery which is a testament to our excellent teams at both LCHC and NSMC.” NSMC neonatologist Ihor Bilyk, M.D., stabilized the baby in the NSMC Special Care Nursery and within a couple of hours Matthew and mom were transferred to MGH so that Matthew could receive more advanced care and his mom could be with him. After treatment at MGH, Matthew was transferred back to NSMC for continued care and observation prior to being sent home. Our neonatologists practice at both NSMC and MGH which allows for continuity of care, and provides the parents with some familiarity and comfort,” said NSMC Chief of Newborn Medicine Sanjay Aurora, M.D., M.P.H. “By transferring the patient back to the NSMC Special Care Nursery prior to going home we can more easily coordinate with LCHC physicians for a seamless discharge.”

  • Jennifer Flanagan, a vibrant 55-year-old from Marblehead, is one of thousands of NSMC patients who have benefited from the NSMC Cancer Center close collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital MGH Cancer Center. Flanagan, who was diagnosed following a biopsy at NSMC Salem Hospital, received the news about her cancer on a Friday. Instead, explained Dr. Duska, Flanagan’s care would require the expertise of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists at both NSMC and MGH. Under the direction of the NSMC Cancer Center’s James McIntyre, M.D., Chair of Radiation Oncology at NSMC and a radiation oncologist on staff at MGH, Flanagan began five weeks of treatment that involved daily radiation coupled with weekly chemotherapy. I never felt alone.” Since finishing her treatment last fall, Flanagan has resumed her previously active lifestyle. “We all have ideas about how we want health care to be,” says Flanagan. “NSMC actually delivers.”

The NSMC change is part of a systemwide Mass General Brigham brand realignment that better communicates a common purpose – to build an integrated healthcare system with patients at its center. NSMC has already applied the new branding in Lynn, where the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center opened last August on the campus of the former Union Hospital. Over the next few months, NSMC will apply the Salem Hospital and Mass General Brigham branding to websites, signs, ID badges, stationery, shuttle buses and more.

Thanks to the education he received at NSMC, Brooks now maintains a much healthier diet, walks up to 25 miles per week and practices chair yoga. • The Beat Goes On for Gordon Hall and NSMC You would never guess that Hall is a veteran of several cardiac procedures to correct an arterial blockage and cardiac arrhythmia, performed over the last 10 years under the care of David Roberts, M.D., NSMC Chief of Cardiology. Hall’s treatment—which included stenting and cardioversion at NSMC and cardiac ablation at Massachusetts General Hospital—exemplifies the full spectrum of leading-edge care offered by the NSMC Heart Center and the seamless collaboration between cardiac specialists at NSMC and Mass General. Recently, Hall made a gift to support cardiology programs and services at NSMC as part of his estate plan. “Gratitude is a powerful motivator,” he says. “Dr. Roberts and NSMC not only saved my life but also have made it possible for me to keep doing the things I love.”

  • As a precaution, the first-time expectant mother from Danvers called her OB/GYN at North Shore Physicians Group, who suggested she pay a visit to the NSMC Birthplace. Paige was immediately transferred to NSMC’s Special Care Nursery, located on the Salem Campus, where physicians and nurses worked to stabilize her, placing a central line through her umbilicus to provide fluids and nutrition and a tube in her nose for oxygen. The days after Paige was born were terrifying,” says Sherman. “We were heartbroken that this child we had brought into the world was suffering, and we would have done anything to make her feel better.” The Shermans are one of 1,100 families served each year by NSMC’s Special Care Nursery, which is the centerpiece of the hospital’s neonatology program To better serve these patients, NSMC is planning an expansion and renovation of the Special Care Nursery, another step in the hospital’s ongoing enhancement of its inpatient experience. Looking back, Paige’s birth was the happiest saddest time of my life,” says Sherman. “It wasn’t the way it was supposed to be, but thanks to the expert and loving care we received at NSMC it turned out beautifully.”

  • In October 2013, after having her annual mammogram at the NSMC Women’s Center in Danvers—something she has done faithfully since her 30s—Velluto received a call from the office of North Shore Medical Center radiologist Kevin Callahan, M.D., asking her to come back in for another test because he saw something on her exam that he was concerned about. This year, Velluto’s screening mammography exam was conducted using tomosynthesis*, or 3-D mammography, a breakthrough technology that was developed by experts at Massachusetts General Hospital and is offered at both NSMC Salem Hospital and the NSMC Women’s Center. Through NSMC’s collaborative breast health program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Velluto was then scheduled to have a follow-up diagnostic examination done at the Breast Health Center at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Like the test performed at the NSMC Danvers Women’s Center, this follow-up diagnostic imaging would also employ breast tomosynthesis. The Mass General/North Shore Breast Health Center and the Breast Health Center sites at NSMC Salem Hospital, NSMC Union Hospital, NSMC Women’s Center and Cape Ann Medical Center are accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiology Control Program and the American College of Radiology.

  • He scheduled a visit with NSMC orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Lovejoy, who had treated him for various back and shoulder problems since 1997. Further tests performed by NSMC oncologist Dr. Ronald Weinger showed that the mass was malignant and that Leveroni had two types of cancer: high grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in his blood and low grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in his bone marrow. Leveroni also speaks in superlatives about the care he received at the NSMC Cancer Center. In the last four years he has participated in the NSMC Cancer WALK with his family, and estimates that he has raised over $130,000 for the cause. Leveroni is also a member of NSMC's Development Board and has co-chaired the NSMC Golf Classic in Ipswich for the past two years.

  • As with so many other NSMC patients, the benefits of weight loss surgery reach far beyond a change in physical appearance. Soon after, Kirk went to one of the free information sessions offered by the NSMC Weight Management Program, which happen nearly every week at either NSMC Salem Hospital or at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Shortly after his surgery, he was able to discontinue using the machine, an outcome that is not uncommon among NSMC weight loss patients. In fact, 92 percent of NSMC patients with sleep apnea stop using a CPAP one year after surgery. NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program is now offering free information sessions at NSMC Salem Hospital and the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers.

  • While the 59-year-old wasn’t initially keen on the idea, she agreed to explore the lung cancer screening program at NSMC. “I didn’t want to face the fact that my decision to smoke for so long could be affecting my health now,” Willard says. The lung cancer screening program at NSMC is designed to evaluate patients who have a history of smoking. Willard’s lung cancer screening, performed in August of 2015 at NSMC Salem Hospital, revealed a nodule on her lung. NSMC interventional radiologist Miriam Neuman, M.D., performed a needle biopsy that confirmed that the nodule was cancerous. Willard spent a week at NSMC Salem Hospital so her lung function could be monitored, and returned to normal activity within a couple of months.

  • In February of 2015, a friend underwent weight loss surgery at NSMC and encouraged Shannon to look into the program, but, as Shannon put it, “I wasn’t ready.” The following month, when Shannon turned 35, she realized she needed to do something about the excess weight she was carrying around, especially because her primary care doctor had indicated she was borderline diabetic. NSMC’s support of its weight loss patients extends far beyond surgery. In fact, post-surgery, patients are required to follow up with NSMC’s Health and Wellness staff once a month for a year, and then every other month for the second year. Shannon credits this high level of support from NSMC, along with additional support from friends and family, as keys to her success. NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program is now offering free information sessions at NSMC Salem Hospital and the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers.

  • An ambulance would have gotten him into an emergency room faster, and the driver would have known to take Kelly to a designated Stroke Center like NSMC Salem Hospital or NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn. Instead, Kelly sat in the waiting room, wasting valuable treatment time. The sooner we can assess patients with stroke symptoms the better,” explained Sanford Levy, M.D., the medical director of NSMC’s stroke program. “There are now medications that can be given to certain stroke patients to break up any blood clots in the brain and mitigate the effects of the stroke. Finally, more than six hours after his initial stroke, Kelly was taken by ambulance to NSMC Union Hospital and quickly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Kelly received speech therapy at NSMC Salem Hospital and has had a full recovery. In 2003, he wrote a series of articles about his experience at the NSMC Cancer Center for the Salem News. “Going through cancer—and now this stroke—has taught me that I’m not immortal.
