  • The support has a long history, as the Merry Mixers recently celebrated 75 years of helping the hospital enhance the level of care for children in the community and across the North Shore. The group of 16 women, who live in Marblehead and Swampscott, focuses on pediatric care. Those dollars have aided the expansion of Salem Hospital's Special Care Nursery, now a Level II B facility for newborns; supported the hospital's Family Resource Center; helped fund a one-of-a-kind outdoor play space for pediatric psychiatry inpatients at the Epstein Center for Behavioral Health; and supported the addition of murals and artwork in each of those spaces. The most exciting thing for us is to hear that people found great care for their kids here.

Because she lives in North Reading, she chose to receive her treatment close to home and family at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers. “I felt so fortunate to be close to home, knowing that my care was the same as it would have been in Boston,” she says. Her positive experience began at the front door. “From the greeters who held the door for me and the people who checked me in, to my fantastic nurses and doctors, everyone was so unbelievably kind and caring,” Donahue says. Donahue became an active advocate for her care, bringing a notebook of questions to every appointment with oncologist Amy Comander, M.D. “Dr. Comander never made me feel like she had to get to the next patient.

The emergency room physician wanted to send me to a hospital more than 20 minutes down the road for follow up care,” said Kelly “I didn’t want to be farther away from home or my doctor, so I insisted on going to North Shore Medical Center." Finally, more than six hours after his initial stroke, Kelly was taken by ambulance to NSMC Union Hospital and quickly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

  • Through NSMC’s collaborative breast health program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Velluto was then scheduled to have a follow-up diagnostic examination done at the Breast Health Center at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Within two weeks of her diagnosis, Velluto had her tumor removed at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care, followed immediately by a regimen of 33 daily radiation treatments. “I loved the team approach,” says Velluto. “It was very reassuring to know that all my doctors were working together on my behalf. And that I was able to find such amazing care so close to home.”
