  • After he had dropped his children off, he pulled over and quickly called his wife who works in the Intensive Care Unit at NSMC Salem Hospital and told her, “I think I’m having a stroke.” Ron has now started taking care of another health issue. “I have sleep apnea, and I have the CPAP machine Continuous positive airway pressure machine; which keeps the airway open during sleep for it. Now I make sure that I use it everyday because I understand that it is important for me to take care of because sleep apnea can contribute to heart and blood vessel disease.” Ron is still active, jogging once or twice a week.

  • Joyce decided to seek another opinion and changed her primary care physician to NSMC’s James Brown, M.D. He referred her for an MRI, which revealed that she had degenerative changes in her spine and bulging of the discs—the cushions between the vertebrae—and these changes were interfering with nerve function and causing pain. For now, Joyce is living a less painful life than she was a few years ago. “NSMC’s pain program has given me my life back,” said Joyce. “My care plan was seamless between Dr. Doorly, my physiatrist and the pain specialists. They worked together to find the cause of my pain and then took a systematic, conservative approach to my care.

  • Through NSMC’s collaborative breast health program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Velluto was then scheduled to have a follow-up diagnostic examination done at the Breast Health Center at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Within two weeks of her diagnosis, Velluto had her tumor removed at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care, followed immediately by a regimen of 33 daily radiation treatments. “I loved the team approach,” says Velluto. “It was very reassuring to know that all my doctors were working together on my behalf. And that I was able to find such amazing care so close to home.”
