  • Captain Bertram joins with Salem civic leaders to apply for a charter to create a hospital to care for the poor. The Lynn Community Health Center LCHC opens on Chestnut Street to provide primary and behavioral health care services to Lynn residents, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay for care. Home Care Group of the North Shore later known as VNA of Greater Salem affiliates with Salem Hospital. Salem Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital announce plans for the development of a $104 million Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. The new facility includes multispecialty physician practices, eight outpatient operating rooms, radiology and lab services, urgent care and comprehensive outpatient cancer services.

  • In addition to funding in Lynn, a Mass General Brigham grant of $500,000 has been awarded to North Shore Community Health NSCH, to enable the expansion of clinical space at the Peabody Family Health Center to include a walk-in urgent care clinic. Expanding urgent care and our electronic infrastructure greatly enhances access and will improve patient’s health, says Margaret Brennan, President and CEO of NSCH. Our patients will have easier access to their medical records and be able to connect directly with their care teams. Mass General Brigham connects a full continuum of care across a system of academic medical centers, community and specialty hospitals, a health insurance plan, physician networks, community health centers, home care, and long-term care services.   • Gargi Cooper, APRN-BC, is nurse practitioner at the Lynn Community Health Center and a leader in developing programs to provide comprehensive care services to homeless populations. She currently leads a novel program to provide primary and urgent care services to the homeless and underserved population in the city of Lynn, serving as medical director of the Recuperative Care Center/ Medical Outreach Program. Through this program, clients receive internal medicine care, health promotion, care management and counseling for acute and chronic illness, in settings that include local shelters, the street, the Lynn Community Health Center and single occupancy residences. She has served as President of the Point Neighborhood Association for more than 20 years and been a proactive advocate for safe and affordable housing, voter registration, civil rights, public education and issues relating to health care and the environment.

During residency you will also have the opportunity to work in multiple different specialties, including but not limited to pulmonary and critical care, cardiology, radiology, neurology, geriatrics, emergency medicine, and urgent care, to name a few. The clinics help care for our local patient population and are located within 10-15 minutes from the main hospital.

  • Just a few weeks ago, Dr. Thomas Mulroy, 38, was in Chiclayo, Peru, where he cared for indigenous residents in a makeshift clinic in an abandoned warehouse without modern tools or electricity. Making the best of rudimentary resources, he and his team pushed three chairs together to form an exam table and used a flashlight app and college-level Spanish to provide expert medical care to local patients, many of whom are migrant workers and families of the remote villages in Central and South America. Seeing firsthand the disparities in healthcare access and technology in non-industrialized countries has inspired the primary care sports medicine doctor to do more. The nearest hospital for most people is hours away and only accessible if they are lucky enough to have transportation,” says Dr. Mulroy, a North Shore Physicians Group doctor who was introduced to the volunteer program when working as an urgent care physician in New York City several years ago. “In these remote communities, we see a lot of dietary, skeletal and muscular issues. More volunteers are needed to meet people where they live and provide the care these residents need to survive.
