SALEM, MA – Salem Hospital hosted two graduation ceremonies earlier this month for 17 students seeking careers in the healthcare field, as part of a program run by Wellspring House.
The Healthcare Office Support Training (HOST) program trains individuals and students, most of whom are from low-income backgrounds, for administrative assistant jobs in healthcare. Many graduates go on to accept positions at Salem Hospital, elsewhere in the Mass General Brigham system, or at other local healthcare organizations.
“This program has been part of Salem Hospital for 21 years and it’s always been really important to us,” said President & COO Roxanne Ruppel, who spoke during one of the ceremonies. “It’s part of our long-standing commitment to not only grow our hospital workforce, but also empower members of our community to become a part of our mission in caring for the health and wellness of the North Shore.”
The program, which was previously known as MediClerk, also offers income-based tuition (free for those who qualify) and 19 college credits at North Shore Community College.
“The program has shown me that I can thrive in high-pressure situations and make decisions that will benefit me in the long run,” said graduate Modestine Soleman, who is preparing to start a new job at Lynn Community Health Center.
“I am most proud of the risks I have taken and the opportunities I have been given to learn essential skills like business communication, computer proficiency, medical procedures, medical terminology, goals, and keyboarding. These experiences have empowered me to take control of my goals and make positive changes for myself,” she said.
The program has two annual daytime programs (Sept-Dec. and Feb.- June), and a part-time evening program (Sept.-June). Those seeking more information should call Wellspring at 978-354-2495 or email: ytestaverde@wellsspringhouse.org.
