Internal Medicine Residency

video introducing the internal medicine residency program at Salem

Watch video to hear from our residents, program directors, clinical directors, and Chairs about what makes our residency program exceptional.

Program overview

Salem Hospital is a member of Mass General Brigham, founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Our ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program provides high quality, personalized training for 21 categorical Internal Medicine residents and four preliminary year interns each year. The small size of our program allows for an intimate and supportive atmosphere. Residents in our program learn the entire spectrum of Internal Medicine, from taking care of patients in the continuity clinic on a longitudinal basis, to acute medicine on the inpatient floors, to providing clinical care in our new state of art Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Affiliations

We are affiliated with the Mass General Brigham Neurology Training Program and Mass General Hospital's Internal Medicine Consult Service, enabling us to do a rotation at Massachusetts General Hospital where we are exposed to higher acuity cases. Our program goals including providing a nurturing environment that fosters the development of highly competent, clinically astute, evidence-based and humane physicians, with an emphasis on comprehensive, patient-centered care that requires a lifetime commitment to learning.

Teaching opportunity and careers

Our residents have the opportunity to teach medical students with an academic appointment through Tufts University School of Medicine. They go on to a variety of careers, including primary care physician, hospital medicine physician, or other specialty. We regularly make innovations to our training program and our residents participate in the ongoing process of improvement.
