Chair of Medicine
Welcome to Salem Hospital! We are pleased with your interest in our training program. Here at Salem, our residents grow within a culture imbued with excellence and kindness. It is a pleasure and privilege to work alongside our interns and residents and to support a wonderful residency leadership team. Salem Hospital is a member of the prestigious Mass General Brigham healthcare system, covets an academic affiliation with Tufts University School of Medicine and is the second largest community hospital in Massachusetts. Our trainees receive extensive experience caring for patients across the primary and tertiary spectrums. The program is comprised of 27 interns and residents and they have experiences in a full-service ICU, inpatient general medicine wards, opportunities in all the major Internal Medicine subspecialties and longitudinal outpatient primary care training. Furthermore, our program requires high caliber quality improvement work supported through the Albright Read Institute.
Although you will learn much about our program through the pages of this website including curricular offerings, an introduction to our current trainees, the schedule format and other testimonials, I wish to highlight several elements of our hospital and department that inspire us to come to work each day!
The first is our value system built upon kindness and camaraderie. Whether it's at the intern welcome cookout in June, 2 o'clock in the morning on your night shift, or at our graduation celebration, our interns and residents are supported along the journey by an engaged faculty and hospital. We recognize that kindness is the only way and that it's also the optimal way to nurture an environment for learners.
The second draws from the allegory of Goldilocks and the three bears. Salem hospital is "just the right size." We are a community hospital that is proud to serve our patients and is engaged in this work on the local level. Yet, we also have ready access to acute, full- service departments in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry and others that provide the breadth and depth of experience you are looking for. Furthermore, our trainees have clinical rotations at Massachusetts General Hospital and access to a variety of scholarly opportunities with faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and others in Boston.
Third, Salem Hospital is a place where "everyone knows your name," to draw from another allegory and one that is Boston based—the television show "Cheers." While walking the hallways, standing at the bedside or in our conference rooms, Salem Hospital provides a first-name basis family atmosphere. We know our interns and residents extremely well and are able to provide a tailored experience for each individual's growth needs. It is a place where you will make lifelong friendships.
Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that the mark of true education is intelligence plus character. Embracing this concept, as we strive to strengthen your clinical acumen, we enrich your ability to meet others' urgency with kindness and dignity, be earnest in purpose yet not lose sight of having fun, celebrate diversity, lead others with love, and be generous with gratitude.
Thank you for your interest in Salem Hospital. I hope you will have the opportunity to visit, meet our extraordinary residents and faculty and consider training with us.
With sincere regards,
