  • SALEM, MA – Salem Hospital hosted two graduation ceremonies earlier this month for 17 students seeking careers in the healthcare field, as part of a program run by Wellspring House. The Healthcare Office Support Training HOST program trains individuals and students, most of whom are from low-income backgrounds, for administrative assistant jobs in healthcare. The program, which was previously known as MediClerk, also offers income-based tuition free for those who qualify and 19 college credits at North Shore Community College. These experiences have empowered me to take control of my goals and make positive changes for myself,” she said. The program has two annual daytime programs Sept-Dec. and Feb.- June, and a part-time evening program Sept.-June.

Gargi Cooper, APRN-BC, is nurse practitioner at the Lynn Community Health Center and a leader in developing programs to provide comprehensive care services to homeless populations. She currently leads a novel program to provide primary and urgent care services to the homeless and underserved population in the city of Lynn, serving as medical director of the Recuperative Care Center/ Medical Outreach Program. This program was established in 2018 with funding from North Shore Medical Center and Mass General Brigham and operates in collaboration with Bridgewell, a local social services agency. Through this program, clients receive internal medicine care, health promotion, care management and counseling for acute and chronic illness, in settings that include local shelters, the street, the Lynn Community Health Center and single occupancy residences.

  • Stress Reduction Program Builds Skills for Coping with Life’s Ups and Downs With skills learned through North Shore Medical Center’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction MBSR program, the harmful effects of stress can be greatly reduced, if not eliminated entirely. The word ‘no’ was not part of my vocabulary and all of the competing demands had me feeling overwhelmed.” Through the MBSR program, Belhumeur learned to slow down, take stock of her situation and better prioritize her time. “When I walked out of that class, I felt like I had a whole new set of techniques that I could use during stressful situations,” she says. Dave Callahan, 62, of Marblehead, also found the program beneficial. “We all have things that bother us on a daily basis and I’m no different,” says Callahan. “The question is, how are you going to deal with the stress? Developed in the late-1970s at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, the MBSR program is now offered at medical centers, hospitals and clinics around the world.

  • The passion for food equity among Lynn advocates was on display Saturday for the Community Farm Pilot Program groundbreaking at the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center in Lynn. This important project is part of a citywide effort to address food insecurity in the local community.   • Programs being developed by the City of Lynn’s Food Security Task Force, Lynn Community Health Center, My Brother’s Table, Greater Lynn Senior Services, Salem State University School of Social Work, and North Shore Community Health will receive support to improve nutrition security, equity, mental health, chronic disease management, and workforce development. Mass General Brigham is partnering with community-based agencies and schools of higher education including Salem State University to create scholarship and loan repayment programs, fellowships, stipends, and salary supplements for those in the mental health field. At Salem State University, a grant of $300,000 will provide scholarships to students in the university’s healthcare studies, occupational therapy and social work programs who are completing behavioral health internships and fieldwork in Massachusetts. The North Shore Cancer WALK has been held in Salem for more than 30 years, raising funds to support cancer programs and services at Salem Hospital, the former North Shore Cancer Center NSCC, and more recently, the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers.   • The intensive outpatient program IOP is a voluntary, structured substance use treatment program intended to support those in recovery from addiction. This program functions to help participants develop coping skills, learn wellness tools, and gain peer support. Length of attendance is determined by participant treatment goals and needs, as well as insurance eligibility. Aftercare planning, including referrals to appropriate providers, support groups, and additional programs as needed. The Recovery Coach program offers 24/7 emergency response services.
