  • An NSMC doctor’s dispatch from the coronavirus front We were asked to help train other doctors who were taking on hospital-based roles from their typical jobs outside of the hospital. My job is to keep vigilant and watch my patients closely. Jessica Benedetto has been an internal medicine physician at NSMC for 12 years and works exclusively in the hospital caring for acutely ill patients. Then, in consultation with Jaime Rivera, M.D., co-director of the NSMC Weight Management Program, Calderas opted for gastric-sleeve surgery. Every step of the way, before and after surgery, Calderas has had the support of the NSMC Weight Management Program, which offers nutrition, wellness and exercise counseling, along with ongoing education and support-group sessions. “We teach patients that surgery is just part of the process,” Dr. Rivera says. “Motivation—a commitment to a healthy diet and exercise—is also key to a s... Calderas has found that weight loss has increased his energy level, which comes in particularly handy in his busy job as an elementary school liaison between teachers, students, and parents whose only language is Spanish.   • Married with three kids, two cats, a dog and a job that sends her out of the country at least six times a year. After the surgery, Kimball needed radiation treatments. “Life was way too hectic for me to go back and forth to Boston,” said Kimball. “I found the NSMC Cancer Center and realized I was getting the same quality of care, the same state-of-the-art technology, and it was just minutes from my house.” Because North Shore Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital work together, and have a collaborative cancer center, electronically accessing Kimball’s medical records made for a seamless transition to the NSMC Cancer Center. In no time, Kimball had an appointment with NSMC radiation oncologist, Derek Chism, M.D., who administered her treatment. She says right away, the NSMC Cancer Center felt competent and caring. “The people at the Cancer Center are some of the nicest I have ever met,” she said. “In addition to providing the highest level of care, they are kind, loving, and they’re interested in you—not just as a patient but as a person.”

  • I had never had problems with my weight,” recalls Dasilva. “But, after I lost my previous job during the recession in 2008, a combination of stress and poor eating habits began to add up.” Concerned about future health issues and committed to making a positive lifestyle change, Dasilva met with his primary care physician, who referred him to NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program. Last January, Dasilva underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery at NSMC Salem Hospital. Now in its sixteenth year, NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program is the largest on the North Shore. For our patients, surgery is the beginning, not the end,” says NSMC director of bariatric weight loss surgery Bernard Benedetto, M.D. “Every pound lost requires a great deal of hard work, and our program is distinguished by our commitment to ensuring long-term success through active education, monitoring and engagement.”

  • Racing from his job as a bar manager at Salem AOH to manage his son's Babe Ruth baseball team, then back home to spend time with his wife and three children, Tom Tardiff, a 48-year old Peabody and former Salem resident leads a very full life. Tardiff immediately went to his NSMC primary care physician, Marvin Clopper, M.D., who ordered an electrocardiogram EKG—a test that evaluates the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart. Dr. Clopper suspected a problem, so he referred Tardiff to Michael Katcher, M.D., a cardiologist and specialist in electrophysiology heart rhythm at NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital MGH. The NSMC Heart Center offers the only comprehensive electrophysiology program on the North Shore. NSMC cardiologists implant more than 120 pacemakers and 60 ICDs every year.

  • Before she left her indelible mark on NSMC Salem Hospital and the Mass General Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers, Henrietta Penny Axelrod danced with Martha Graham, tested airplanes, directed plays and entertained Army troops in Europe. Penny's dedication to NSMC began during a brief stay at Salem Hospital in the early 1950s. Penny's success as a volunteer prompted a job offer: She was hired to set up the volunteer program for Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital and served as its first director of volunteers.

  • Despite Doucette’s chemotherapy and radiation treatments, which took place five days a week for seven weeks in a row, Doucette rarely missed a day of work at his job as general manager of Lynn Ladder and Scaffolding Company. “The Cancer Center team helped minimize my treatment’s effects on my job and the rest of my life. A speech and language pathologist from NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn and a registered dietitian based at the Cancer Center helped Doucette re-learn how to chew and swallow and to alter his diet accordingly.
