  • I was just going in for a regular checkup,” explained Venuti. “I felt great, and I never expected a diagnosis like this.” Venuti’s primary care physician, NSMC’s Elysia Griswold,M.D., noticed that Venuti’s glands were swollen and red. After a dose of antibiotics didn’t clear things up, Dr. Griswold referred her to Charles Leidner,M.D., an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist at NSMC. NSMC provides a variety of professionally led peer support groups to help patients learn more about their diseases and treatments, and promote both physical and emotional healing. She joined the NSMC Cancer Center’s Head and Neck Cancer Support Group. Cancer free for nearly three years now, Venuti has participated in the NSMC CancerWALK, and even takes her story on the road.

  • Peabody-based mixed media artist Leon Dodds has created a one-of-a-kind artwork to honor the heroic nurses, physicians and staff of North Shore Medical Center NSMC. Inspired by his girlfriend, Lynsay Minton, R.N., a nurse on Davenport 9 at NSMC Salem Hospital, Dodd donated the painting to honor the dedication of health care professionals during the Coronavirus outbreak. NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital together provide care at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers.   • Emergency medical technicians arrived and shocked her heart back into the correct rhythm with a defibrillator and she was transported to NSMC Salem Hospital. Once in good condition at NSMC, she had a number of cardiac tests to determine what caused her heart to stop. It was not until Stablewski mentioned that she had been feeling a little run down the week prior to her heart stopping that NSMC physicians solved the mystery of her attack. In addition to slowly getting back to walking and kayaking, she plans to join NSMC’s ICD support group. “I’m looking forward to sharing my story and hearing what others are doing to get back to a normal life,” said Stablewski. “Life has given me a second chance.   • Colarusso’s primary care physician, NSMC’s Dr. Yuri Levin, made the diagnosis and convinced Colarusso to take it seriously. “Dr. Levin sat me down, and asked me to think about the future,” said Colarusso. “I knew I had to make some big changes in my life, and I knew I couldn’t do it alone.” That’s where NSMC’s Diabetes Management Program came in.   • Sue Nevins, NSMC neonatal nurse, a finalist for the Schwartz Compassionate Caregiver Award Nevins, a West Peabody resident, has worked as a neonatal nurse in the Special Care Nursery at NSMC for 36 years. According to NSMC chaplain Jane Korins, who nominated her, "Sue possesses the uncanny ability to discern each of her tiny patients’ unique personalities and instill confidence in the parents that their babies are recognized for their uniqueness." According to NSMC President and CEO Robert Norton, "It is an honor to work with Sue Nevins and to witness the extraordinary dignity she extends to each and every patient. She sets the standard for compassion and provides a model for all of us at NSMC to follow."

  • After 18 months of trying to conceive, Melissa Meehan and her husband Matt, of Swampscott, turned to NSMC reproductive endocrinologist Mitchell Rein, M.D., for help. At that time NSMC's Reproductive Medicine Program was a satellite of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Reproductive Medicine, considered by physicians and patients alike to be one of the nation's finest programs for infertility treatment. Melissa reported to the NSMC Women's Center every few days during this two week period. She conceived on her second attempt and in May 2006, gave birth to a healthy daughter, Kira, at the NSMC Birthplace at Salem Hospital.   • Once a pulse was restored, they put him on monitors, inserted intravenous lines and gave him medications to stabilize his heart for the short ride to NSMC Salem Hospital.   • Dramatic Rescue: Danvers Dog Trainer Bounces Back at NSMC Salem Hospital Rochefort was rushed to NSMC Salem Hospital, immediately placed in isolation and provided with nutrients through a feeding tube. Because C. Diff can be resistant to antibiotics, physicians at NSMC used a variety of medications to treat her infection, and Rochefort eventually began to recover. She spent 16 difficult days in NSMC Salem Hospital in very serious condition, but always in good hands. “Over the course of my illness, I lost 40 pounds and was as close to death as I’ve ever been, but my care was extraordinary,” she says. Physicians like hospitalist Elvis Patel, M.D., also made it clear to Rochefort that the NSMC staff took a holistic approach to caring for her. “Dr. Patel took the time to sit and talk with me, not just about my condition, but about my life outside the hospital,” Rochefort says. “That personal connection meant the world to me.”

  • But the Burgers have not forgotten the care team that NSMC assembled to save their daughter’s life and have taken action to support a unique stress reduction program for pre-teen patients as a way of saying thanks. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. To express their gratitude to the team that cared for their daughter, the Burgers have made a significant donation to NSMC’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. We wanted to give something to NSMC that would both honor Dr. Bailey and Dr. Prince and directly benefit other families struggling with a pre-adolescent child,” says Deborah. “The Mindfulness program seemed like the perfect fit.”

After receiving the go-ahead from her insurance company, Melanie started the evaluation process that all NSMC bariatric patients follow, which includes medical tests, nutritional evaluation, a nursing assessment and a psychological evaluation.   • NSMC Receives $1 Million to Launch Robotic Surgery Program Building on its tradition of surgical excellence, NSMC is preparing to launch a Robotic Surgery Program at its Salem Hospital campus. Supported by a $1 million challenge grant from the Davenport Fund, the program will be the only one of its kind on the North Shore. “Adding robotic surgery to NSMC is an exciting advance for our facility and our patients,” says Marc S.
