- Bob Matthias, 55, of Lynn, arrived at NSMC's Emergency Department on a cold February night, all but unconscious. When he awoke in the NSMC Heart Center two days later, he learned how close he had come to dying. NSMC's ability to provide both emergency angioplasty and cardiac surgery on-site saved this man's life," says David Roberts, M.D., NSMC Medical Director of Cardiology. Dr. Thomas Vander Salm, M.D., NSMC Chief of Cardiac Surgery, replaced Matthias's heart valve and conducted a graft to completely bypass the blocked artery. If not for the doctors and nurses at NSMC, I wouldn't be alive today."

- Another forum for members of the North Shore community to have a voice in the care delivery and safety programs at NSMC is the Patient Family Advisory Council PFAC. Co-chaired by Page and Ed Budelmann, a software professional from Ipswich, the 16-member committee helps NSMC fulfill a requirement established by the Department of Public Health that all healthcare organizations facilitate dialogue with patients and families in a formal manner. Being part of this group has been both an educational and eye-opening experience,” says Budelmann. “I have had a personal and professional connection to NSMC for many years and, through this group, I am still continually surprised and amazed by the complexity of healthcare today and the high quality of clinical services offered by the medical center.” Established in 2009, NSMC’s PFAC has been slowly building momentum over the past several years. Among PFAC’s upcoming plans are a series of focus groups with residents of a local retirement community to gain an additional perspective on different aspects of care at NSMC.

- But the Burgers have not forgotten the care team that NSMC assembled to save their daughter’s life and have taken action to support a unique stress reduction program for pre-teen patients as a way of saying thanks. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. To express their gratitude to the team that cared for their daughter, the Burgers have made a significant donation to NSMC’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. We wanted to give something to NSMC that would both honor Dr. Bailey and Dr. Prince and directly benefit other families struggling with a pre-adolescent child,” says Deborah. “The Mindfulness program seemed like the perfect fit.”

- Once a pulse was restored, they put him on monitors, inserted intravenous lines and gave him medications to stabilize his heart for the short ride to NSMC Salem Hospital. Three days later, NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital cardiac surgeon Ann Toran, M.D., performed a quadruple bypass to restore proper blood flow in his heart. After his release from the hospital, Fitzgerald enrolled in NSMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, where he fine-tuned his diet, built up his strength and endurance through supervised walking and weight training, and learned better ways to deal with stress. We were so lucky that John saw Dave and started CPR so quickly,” said Tracie Fitzgerald, Dave’s wife. “And on top of that, we were fortunate to be so close to NSMC Salem Hospital, where they could perform the angioplasty and cardiac surgery right there. - Colarusso’s primary care physician, NSMC’s Dr. Yuri Levin, made the diagnosis and convinced Colarusso to take it seriously. “Dr. Levin sat me down, and asked me to think about the future,” said Colarusso. “I knew I had to make some big changes in my life, and I knew I couldn’t do it alone.” That’s where NSMC’s Diabetes Management Program came in. Colarusso’s wife, Betty, attended diet and exercise classes at NSMC alongside her husband, a choice Colarusso says has been extremely beneficial. “She does all of our food shopping and cooking, so it helped for her to hear first hand the nutritional changes I needed to make,” said Colarusso. “Surprisingly, those changes didn’t have as much to do with what I was eating, but rather ho... - With the encouragement of a friend who had recently had gastric band surgery at NSMC, she met with NSMC bariatric surgeon Bernard Benedetto,MD, and decided to have minimally invasive surgery to insert a gastric band also known as a lap band around her stomach. “I liked the band better than gastric bypass because it’s adjustable, could change with me and be removed if necessary,” said ... The post-operative program is what sets NSMC apart from other hospitals,” said James. “A friend had a gastric bypass at another hospital and because she had no follow-up support, her lifestyle and habits didn’t change and she gained back much of her weight after her initial weight loss. NSMC’s team has helped me solve real life issues, like the temptation of birthday cake and the changing attitudes of some friends.

- Dramatic Rescue: Danvers Dog Trainer Bounces Back at NSMC Salem Hospital Rochefort was rushed to NSMC Salem Hospital, immediately placed in isolation and provided with nutrients through a feeding tube. Physicians like hospitalist Elvis Patel, M.D., also made it clear to Rochefort that the NSMC staff took a holistic approach to caring for her. “Dr. Patel took the time to sit and talk with me, not just about my condition, but about my life outside the hospital,” Rochefort says. “That personal connection meant the world to me.”

Sheckman’s worst fear was confirmed when NSMC radiologist, Sarah Whitehead, M.D., reviewed the CT scan results and discovered a mass on the upper lobe of Sheckman’s right lung. Because the cancer was detected early, however, Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center oncologist Rachael Rosovsky, M.D., M.P.H., and NSMC thoracic surgeon Dean Donahue, M.D., were able to work together on a treatment plan for Sheckman.
