Salem Hospital is committed to providing the highest quality care for every patient who needs us and to measurable improvements in the local population's health status. Through our Community Benefit Program, we collaborate with community stakeholders to enhance existing programs and develop new programs to respond to the health care needs of priority populations in our community. The Community Affairs and Health Access Committee of the Salem Hospital Board was established in 2004 to strengthen long-standing community relationships advance our community health objectives. The committee is comprised of 20 members including Board Directors, clinical leaders, members of the Lynn Health Task Force, and representatives from the local community health centers and other community organizations.

  • Salem Hospital opens Adult Mental Health Unit: Unit extends Emergency Department mental health service Photo Caption: L Dr. Phillip Rice, Jr., Chair of Emergency Medicine and R Dr. Mark Schechter, Chair of Psychiatry cut the ribbon Oct. 27 to open the Adult Mental Health Unit at Salem Hospital, which will provide emergency mental health care to local patients. This 16-bed unit will provide care for adult emergency behavioral health patients. The unit is an extension of the behavioral health pod in the main Salem Hospital Emergency Department. The unit will be staffed by mental health professionals working closely with colleagues in the hospital’s Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, which provides inpatient mental health care to pediatric, adult and senior patients.

Mass General Brigham certified financial counselors are available to help patients who want to apply for health insurance through The Health Connector. Patients who meet the eligibility requirements may also work with our staff to apply for Mass Health and Healthy Safety Net.

  • With World War II underway, Salem Hospital is among 10 in the state designated as a base hospital unit with doctors affiliated with the US Public Health Service, to be activated to serve the country, if needed. The Lynn Community Health Center LCHC opens on Chestnut Street to provide primary and behavioral health care services to Lynn residents, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay for care. Only a few years later, in 1976, North Shore Community Health NSCH is founded to provide comprehensive primary care services to residents, first in Peabody and eventually expanding to Salem and Gloucester. These vital organizations have grown and diversified significantly since those early days and remain a critical component of our region’s health care services network.

  • North Shore Medical Center NSMC today announced that longtime Marblehead resident Arthur J. Epstein has committed a gift of $5 million to NSMC in support of the Medical Center’s plan to build a new behavioral health center at its Salem campus. Last fall, NSMC broke ground on a $207 million project to consolidate hospital-based medical, surgical, behavioral health and emergency care on one campus in Salem. As part of this project, NSMC is converting the former Spaulding Hospital North Shore into a 90-bed facility dedicated to behavioral health. The facility will be aligned with Massachusetts General Hospital and add 24 new beds to the region for psychiatry and behavioral health care. It will integrate addiction treatment with inpatient and outpatient psychiatry, mental health services and further development of community-based programs.

  • Alie holds a bachelor's degree in nutrition and a master's degree in nutrition and health promotion from Simmons College. She knows the important role food plays in overall health and that there is no “perfect” diet for everyone. She uses her more than 10 years of nutrition experience and knowledge to help patients find their unique way of eating with the goal of improving their health, energy and overall well-being – so not just physical, but mental health too. Ann holds a bachelor's in dietetics from the University of Dayton and a masters in nutrition from the Massachusetts Institute of Health Professions. Her clinical interests include cardiovascular health, diabetes, digestive issues and nutrition support.
