During the three years of training residents build a patient panel. They manage the chronic health needs of this patient panel while also delivering preventive medicine. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. Dr. Bailey transferred his new patient to the pediatric emergency department at MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center and quickly pulled together a care team that included Jefferson Prince, M.D., Director of Child Psychiatry. For any eating disorder,” says Dr. Bailey, “the first step is determining the root cause and then using behavioral programs to get the patient to eat.   • As is the case with all of his spinal stenosis patients, Dr. Medlock initially took a conservative approach to Korumpas’s treatment, referring him to Kelly Pajela, M.D., one of three physiatrists who work in his Peabody practice. Surgery is always the last step in the treatment process, when we can no longer keep a patient comfortable by other means,” says Dr. Pajela. “My role with Dennis was to provide nonsurgical treatment options such as medication, physical therapy and teaching him how to modify his physical activities.” More than 80 percent of all patients who have this type of surgery will experience a significant improvement in their function and a markedly reduced level of pain and discomfort. Dr. Medlock performed Korumpas’s procedure at NSMC Salem Hospital. After two days in the hospital, Korumpas was back home and on the road to recovery.

  • Two and a half years ago, during a visit to her primary care physician, she saw a flyer about NSMC’s hypnotherapy program as aid for smoking cessation. “I figured since it was one-on-one and from the hospital, it might be more effective than what I had tried before,” she said. After completing an in-depth interview about her medical and family history, her likes and dislikes including favorite colors and music, she met with certified hypnotist Karen Pischke, R.N., B.S.N. 978.741.4151. “The more we can learn about what appeals to a patient, the more we can individualize the hypnosis,” explained Pischke. The preliminary results of the study, led by Faysal Hasan, M.D., medical director of NSMC’s smoking cessation program, showed that patients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be non-smokers at six months compared with patients using nicotine replacement therapy alone or patients who quit “cold turkey.” “This study suggests that hypnotherapy can be very us...
