  • She and her husband Jefferson Reyes quickly drove to the Birthplace at North Shore Medical Center, where she had an emergency Caesarean section C-section. When the day arrived for the birth in April, Gabriela found the North Shore Medical Center NSMC Birthplace staff ready to give her the support she needed and an exceptional experience. After her daughter, Mia, was born one month prematurely this past December, Amanda Meads found herself spending a lot of time—up to eight hours a day over a three-week period—in North Shore Medical Center’s Special Care Nursery. The close relationship between the family and North Shore Medical Center dates back nearly 100 years see sidebar on next page. In fact, the hospital’s Macomber building was named after Harold Macomber, once a visionary leader and fundraiser at the medical center.

  • In North Shore Medical Center’s new hybrid vascular operating room, state-of-the-art imaging technology captures real-time, three-dimensional images that enable surgeons to perform complex life-saving procedures. Treatments include clot-dissolving medication and angioplasty, which involves inserting a thin balloon-tipped tube or catheter into the blocked artery, and placing a stent a wire mesh tube to keep the artery open so blood can flow properly. Over the past few years, NSMC has been implementing an ambitious expansion and development plan to provide high-quality, integrated, accessible care to North Shore families, and our Vascular Center is emblematic of this effort,” says James Balcom, M.D., vascular surgeon and Medical Director of NSMC’s Advanced Wound Center.   • Local Sports Medicine Expert Returns from Mission Trip to Peru: North Shore medical team reflects on serving the Indigenous Making the best of rudimentary resources, he and his team pushed three chairs together to form an exam table and used a flashlight app and college-level Spanish to provide expert medical care to local patients, many of whom are migrant workers and families of the remote villages in Central and South America. We bring what supplies and medications we can with us, but it never feels like enough. This was the fifth year he has traveled with a group of physicians, physician assistants, medical students and other clinicians through FNE International, a nonprofit that partners with communities in developing nations to advance housing, health and education. Dr. Mulroy joined six other medical providers working in clinics reaching five Peruvian villages in the area. “These people are truly heroic,” says Mulroy, “and they teach me so much about happiness and resilience.” His colleague, Moskal, enjoyed the extra honor of having her 51st birthday celebrated while on the mission trip.

  • Eight years ago, Todd and Deborah Burger of Lexington were experiencing every parent’s worst nightmare: Their child was in the midst of a life-threatening medical crisis and nobody could help. That’s where they met Edward Bailey, M.D., Chair of Pediatrics at MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center, and their daughter’s outlook changed for the better. With a background in behavioral pediatrics, Dr. Bailey knew immediately that a swift intervention was needed. “I could see that she was medically and emotionally unstable and in a progressive downhill spiral that could lead to a catastrophic outcome,” he says. Dr. Bailey transferred his new patient to the pediatric emergency department at MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center and quickly pulled together a care team that included Jefferson Prince, M.D., Director of Child Psychiatry. She was medically stable, but faced a multi-year recovery still ahead.

  • A member of the Navy Reserves with 15 years of active duty under his belt, Dr. Peterson was being called up to lead a medical unit for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force that was heading to Afghanistan. There he was in charge of a 17-person medical team comprised of general surgeons, anesthesiologists, critical care nurses and physicians and medics. Our mission was to provide medical support to military units that were operating in the region, trying to stabilize the border and prevent the Taliban from transporting weapons and drugs through the mountain passes of Pakistan,” says Dr. Peterson. Working in a small medical facility on the base, Dr. Peterson and his team were focused on stabilizing combat-injured and critically wounded soldiers—of which there was a steady flow—and transferring them to hospitals with more advanced clinical capabilities. After medical school, he completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, which gave him the opportunity to take care of a wide variety of patients and conditions.

  • The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the relationship between patients and caregivers, has selected Suzanne Nevins, a neonatal nurse at North Shore Medical Center, as one of five finalists for its prestigious Schwartz Center Compassionate Caregiver Award. Nevins’ awareness of the critical role that compassion plays in the patient-caregiver relationship became even stronger when she suffered from a medical complication during a surgery of her own. She turned this personal trauma into a positive experience by becoming an advocate for open communication between patients and caregivers after a medical complication. Since the incident, Nevins and her surgeon have worked together to ensure that all patients who experience medical complications are treated compassionately.

Working with breast surgeons, pathologists and others to determine the best course of treatment, our medical oncologists use the latest chemotherapy regimens and anti-estrogen therapies. Implementing a fundamental change in the way psychiatry consultations are conducted at the hospital, this approach dedicates psychiatric team members to integrate with inpatient medical and surgical hospital units. The psychiatric team works collaboratively with the medical team to more quickly address mental illness and care for patients more holistically, leading to better outcomes.

  • After completing an in-depth interview about her medical and family history, her likes and dislikes including favorite colors and music, she met with certified hypnotist Karen Pischke, R.N., B.S.N. 978.741.4151. “The more we can learn about what appeals to a patient, the more we can individualize the hypnosis,” explained Pischke. She’s breathing better, has been weaned off of her breathing medication and is feeling great. “My lung capacity has improved and I’m walking longer distances without losing my breath at all. Hypnosis is on its way to becoming more widely accepted as an effective treatment for smoking cessation based on research conducted at North Shore Medical Center. The preliminary results of the study, led by Faysal Hasan, M.D., medical director of NSMC’s smoking cessation program, showed that patients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be non-smokers at six months compared with patients using nicotine replacement therapy alone or patients who quit “cold turkey.” “This study suggests that hypnotherapy can be very us...

  • Plans were put in place to increase our medical beds, increase our ICUs, increase our ventilators. My initial fear and dread have turned into immense pride that I work at North Shore Medical Center. Balancing the need to do assessments, medications, IV care, glucose checks, etc., all while avoiding using too much protective gear has been a tremendous challenge. NSMC is now one of the busiest hospitals in the state for COVID-19 activity, including the large academic medical centers.
