  • Bob Matthias, 55, of Lynn, arrived at NSMC's Emergency Department on a cold February night, all but unconscious. When he awoke in the NSMC Heart Center two days later, he learned how close he had come to dying. NSMC's ability to provide both emergency angioplasty and cardiac surgery on-site saved this man's life," says David Roberts, M.D., NSMC Medical Director of Cardiology. Dr. Thomas Vander Salm, M.D., NSMC Chief of Cardiac Surgery, replaced Matthias's heart valve and conducted a graft to completely bypass the blocked artery. If not for the doctors and nurses at NSMC, I wouldn't be alive today."

  • While the 59-year-old wasn’t initially keen on the idea, she agreed to explore the lung cancer screening program at NSMC. “I didn’t want to face the fact that my decision to smoke for so long could be affecting my health now,” Willard says. The lung cancer screening program at NSMC is designed to evaluate patients who have a history of smoking. Willard’s lung cancer screening, performed in August of 2015 at NSMC Salem Hospital, revealed a nodule on her lung. NSMC interventional radiologist Miriam Neuman, M.D., performed a needle biopsy that confirmed that the nodule was cancerous. Willard spent a week at NSMC Salem Hospital so her lung function could be monitored, and returned to normal activity within a couple of months.

  • Another forum for members of the North Shore community to have a voice in the care delivery and safety programs at NSMC is the Patient Family Advisory Council PFAC. Co-chaired by Page and Ed Budelmann, a software professional from Ipswich, the 16-member committee helps NSMC fulfill a requirement established by the Department of Public Health that all healthcare organizations facilitate dialogue with patients and families in a formal manner. Being part of this group has been both an educational and eye-opening experience,” says Budelmann. “I have had a personal and professional connection to NSMC for many years and, through this group, I am still continually surprised and amazed by the complexity of healthcare today and the high quality of clinical services offered by the medical center.” Established in 2009, NSMC’s PFAC has been slowly building momentum over the past several years. Among PFAC’s upcoming plans are a series of focus groups with residents of a local retirement community to gain an additional perspective on different aspects of care at NSMC.

  • In February of 2015, a friend underwent weight loss surgery at NSMC and encouraged Shannon to look into the program, but, as Shannon put it, “I wasn’t ready.” The following month, when Shannon turned 35, she realized she needed to do something about the excess weight she was carrying around, especially because her primary care doctor had indicated she was borderline diabetic. NSMC’s support of its weight loss patients extends far beyond surgery. In fact, post-surgery, patients are required to follow up with NSMC’s Health and Wellness staff once a month for a year, and then every other month for the second year. Shannon credits this high level of support from NSMC, along with additional support from friends and family, as keys to her success. NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program is now offering free information sessions at NSMC Salem Hospital and the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers.

  • An ambulance would have gotten him into an emergency room faster, and the driver would have known to take Kelly to a designated Stroke Center like NSMC Salem Hospital or NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn. Instead, Kelly sat in the waiting room, wasting valuable treatment time. The sooner we can assess patients with stroke symptoms the better,” explained Sanford Levy, M.D., the medical director of NSMC’s stroke program. “There are now medications that can be given to certain stroke patients to break up any blood clots in the brain and mitigate the effects of the stroke. Finally, more than six hours after his initial stroke, Kelly was taken by ambulance to NSMC Union Hospital and quickly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. Kelly received speech therapy at NSMC Salem Hospital and has had a full recovery. In 2003, he wrote a series of articles about his experience at the NSMC Cancer Center for the Salem News. “Going through cancer—and now this stroke—has taught me that I’m not immortal.

  • Nitrous Oxide Helps Salem Mom through Delivery at NSMC Birthplace When Megan DiMambro walked into the Birthplace at North Shore Medical Center NSMC this past June, her birthing plan was the same as it had been with her first child: “Take things one step at a time and, if possible, give birth naturally.” While an epidural had been necessary with her first delivery, this time she was armed with knowledge about a new pain management option being offered ... Every woman experiences labor differently, which is why it is important that we have various coping options to meet their needs,” said NSMC midwife, Mary Collari, C.N.M. “By offering nitrous oxide at the Birthplace not only are we improving the labor experience, but we also give patients the choice of having a medicine that has limited effects on them and their baby, allowing them to bond... Often times, women start labor unsure about whether they want an epidural,” said Nikolai Gonzales, M.D., NSMC Chief of Obstetrics Anesthesia. “Fortunately, the NSMC Birthplace offers many pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic pain management options in addition to epidurals and nitrous oxide, including a supportive birth environment, touch and massage, maternal positioning, relaxation and br...

  • It also gave her a new appreciation for what sets NSMC apart. Patients have often told me about the feeling in community and family they experience at NSMC,” she says. “My colleagues and I strive to deliver that feeling through our work, and it was a great comfort to be on the receiving end of such thoughtful and collaborative care.” A longtime participant in the North Shore Cancer WALK, Dr. Krag has always appreciated the event as a demonstration of the NSMC community spirit. Since it began in 1990, the WALK has contributed more than $19 million to support state-of the-art cancer treatment and programs at NSMC and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. Money raised will support oncology services at NSMC and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center.

  • Emergency medical technicians arrived and shocked her heart back into the correct rhythm with a defibrillator and she was transported to NSMC Salem Hospital. Once in good condition at NSMC, she had a number of cardiac tests to determine what caused her heart to stop. It was not until Stablewski mentioned that she had been feeling a little run down the week prior to her heart stopping that NSMC physicians solved the mystery of her attack. In addition to slowly getting back to walking and kayaking, she plans to join NSMC’s ICD support group. “I’m looking forward to sharing my story and hearing what others are doing to get back to a normal life,” said Stablewski. “Life has given me a second chance. I am so grateful to the heroes who came to my aid and my NSMC team.

  • With encouragement and support from friends and a much-admired cousin who herself had undergone bariatric surgery, Calderas turned to the NSMC Weight Management Program, the largest and most successful program of its kind on the North Shore. Then, in consultation with Jaime Rivera, M.D., co-director of the NSMC Weight Management Program, Calderas opted for gastric-sleeve surgery. Every step of the way, before and after surgery, Calderas has had the support of the NSMC Weight Management Program, which offers nutrition, wellness and exercise counseling, along with ongoing education and support-group sessions. “We teach patients that surgery is just part of the process,” Dr. Rivera says. “Motivation—a commitment to a healthy diet and exercise—is also key to a s... To monitor Cunningham’s A-fib, Dr. McGough referred her to NSMC cardiologist Michael Katcher, M.D. “I first tried to treat Joanne’s condition with medication, but she didn’t respond as well as I had hoped and continued to experience frequent and severe episodes of atrial fibrillation,” says Dr. Katcher .Both he and Cunningham knew that the next step would be surgery at the NSMC Hear... Because C. Diff can be resistant to antibiotics, physicians at NSMC used a variety of medications to treat her infection, and Rochefort eventually began to recover. She spent 16 difficult days in NSMC Salem Hospital in very serious condition, but always in good hands. “Over the course of my illness, I lost 40 pounds and was as close to death as I’ve ever been, but my care was extraordinary,” she says. Physicians like hospitalist Elvis Patel, M.D., also made it clear to Rochefort that the NSMC staff took a holistic approach to caring for her. “Dr. Patel took the time to sit and talk with me, not just about my condition, but about my life outside the hospital,” Rochefort says. “That personal connection meant the world to me.”

Colarusso’s wife, Betty, attended diet and exercise classes at NSMC alongside her husband, a choice Colarusso says has been extremely beneficial. “She does all of our food shopping and cooking, so it helped for her to hear first hand the nutritional changes I needed to make,” said Colarusso. “Surprisingly, those changes didn’t have as much to do with what I was eating, but rather ho... • But the Burgers have not forgotten the care team that NSMC assembled to save their daughter’s life and have taken action to support a unique stress reduction program for pre-teen patients as a way of saying thanks. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. To express their gratitude to the team that cared for their daughter, the Burgers have made a significant donation to NSMC’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. We wanted to give something to NSMC that would both honor Dr. Bailey and Dr. Prince and directly benefit other families struggling with a pre-adolescent child,” says Deborah. “The Mindfulness program seemed like the perfect fit.”
