  • After 18 months of trying to conceive, Melissa Meehan and her husband Matt, of Swampscott, turned to NSMC reproductive endocrinologist Mitchell Rein, M.D., for help. At that time NSMC's Reproductive Medicine Program was a satellite of the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Reproductive Medicine, considered by physicians and patients alike to be one of the nation's finest programs for infertility treatment. Melissa reported to the NSMC Women's Center every few days during this two week period. She conceived on her second attempt and in May 2006, gave birth to a healthy daughter, Kira, at the NSMC Birthplace at Salem Hospital. But the thoughtful care I received at NSMC allowed me to keep believing that someday, I would be a mom."

  • Colarusso’s primary care physician, NSMC’s Dr. Yuri Levin, made the diagnosis and convinced Colarusso to take it seriously. “Dr. Levin sat me down, and asked me to think about the future,” said Colarusso. “I knew I had to make some big changes in my life, and I knew I couldn’t do it alone.” That’s where NSMC’s Diabetes Management Program came in. Colarusso’s wife, Betty, attended diet and exercise classes at NSMC alongside her husband, a choice Colarusso says has been extremely beneficial. “She does all of our food shopping and cooking, so it helped for her to hear first hand the nutritional changes I needed to make,” said Colarusso. “Surprisingly, those changes didn’t have as much to do with what I was eating, but rather ho... • But the Burgers have not forgotten the care team that NSMC assembled to save their daughter’s life and have taken action to support a unique stress reduction program for pre-teen patients as a way of saying thanks. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. To express their gratitude to the team that cared for their daughter, the Burgers have made a significant donation to NSMC’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. We wanted to give something to NSMC that would both honor Dr. Bailey and Dr. Prince and directly benefit other families struggling with a pre-adolescent child,” says Deborah. “The Mindfulness program seemed like the perfect fit.”

  • Over the emotionally charged month that followed, the Meehans became well acquainted with the staff of NSMC’s Level IIB Special Care Nursery and came to appreciate not only the clinical expertise it provided in caring for their premature babies, but also the nursery’s unwavering kindness and compassion. “We certainly hadn’t planned on having the babies when we went in for that appoint... Admitted to the NSMC Birthplace at Salem Hospital that afternoon, Kate was scheduled to begin a round of steroid treatments to help strengthen the babies’ lungs prior to delivery. Just hours later, Liam and Maggie were delivered by NSMC OB/GYN Justine Gelinas, D.O., weighing just 3 lbs. and 5 lbs., respectively. The babies were incredibly small and fragile—just ridiculously tiny,” recalls Bobby, who was the first to see the twins after birth. “Liam’s head fit right in the palm of my hand.” The babies were immediately transferred to NSMC’s Special Care Nursery, also located at NSMC Salem Hospital, where a team of neonatologists, pediatricians, nurses and respiratory therapists worked to st...

  • Dramatic Rescue: Danvers Dog Trainer Bounces Back at NSMC Salem Hospital Rochefort was rushed to NSMC Salem Hospital, immediately placed in isolation and provided with nutrients through a feeding tube. Because C. Diff can be resistant to antibiotics, physicians at NSMC used a variety of medications to treat her infection, and Rochefort eventually began to recover. She spent 16 difficult days in NSMC Salem Hospital in very serious condition, but always in good hands. “Over the course of my illness, I lost 40 pounds and was as close to death as I’ve ever been, but my care was extraordinary,” she says. Physicians like hospitalist Elvis Patel, M.D., also made it clear to Rochefort that the NSMC staff took a holistic approach to caring for her. “Dr. Patel took the time to sit and talk with me, not just about my condition, but about my life outside the hospital,” Rochefort says. “That personal connection meant the world to me.”

  • After the surgery, Kimball needed radiation treatments. “Life was way too hectic for me to go back and forth to Boston,” said Kimball. “I found the NSMC Cancer Center and realized I was getting the same quality of care, the same state-of-the-art technology, and it was just minutes from my house.” Because North Shore Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital work together, and have a collaborative cancer center, electronically accessing Kimball’s medical records made for a seamless transition to the NSMC Cancer Center. In no time, Kimball had an appointment with NSMC radiation oncologist, Derek Chism, M.D., who administered her treatment. She says right away, the NSMC Cancer Center felt competent and caring. “The people at the Cancer Center are some of the nicest I have ever met,” she said. “In addition to providing the highest level of care, they are kind, loving, and they’re interested in you—not just as a patient but as a person.”

  • Joyce decided to seek another opinion and changed her primary care physician to NSMC’s James Brown, M.D. He referred her for an MRI, which revealed that she had degenerative changes in her spine and bulging of the discs—the cushions between the vertebrae—and these changes were interfering with nerve function and causing pain. NSMC neurosurgeon and spine specialist, Terence Doorly, M.D., evaluated Joyce and decided the first course of action should be a comprehensive non-surgical approach. “I wanted to try to manage her pain with a variety of exercises, electrical nerve stimulation, medications and injections rather than surgery which is painful and has a long recovery time,” said Dr. Doorly. NSMC pain management specialists, Minesh Patel, M.D., and Edouard Vaynberg, M.D., injected a combination of anesthetic numbing agents and anti-inflammatory drugs into different locations in her spine to pinpoint the source of the pain. For now, Joyce is living a less painful life than she was a few years ago. “NSMC’s pain program has given me my life back,” said Joyce. “My care plan was seamless between Dr. Doorly, my physiatrist and the pain specialists.

  • Two and a half years ago, during a visit to her primary care physician, she saw a flyer about NSMC’s hypnotherapy program as aid for smoking cessation. “I figured since it was one-on-one and from the hospital, it might be more effective than what I had tried before,” she said. The preliminary results of the study, led by Faysal Hasan, M.D., medical director of NSMC’s smoking cessation program, showed that patients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be non-smokers at six months compared with patients using nicotine replacement therapy alone or patients who quit “cold turkey.” “This study suggests that hypnotherapy can be very us... • Knowing I had been a cigarette smoker, that article really impacted me,” says Sheckman, who smoked for a number of decades. “I knew I had to take action.” Sheckman discussed her concerns with her NSMC primary care physician James Gottschall, M.D., who recommended a CT, or computerized tomography scan, at NSMC Union Hospital. Sheckman’s worst fear was confirmed when NSMC radiologist, Sarah Whitehead, M.D., reviewed the CT scan results and discovered a mass on the upper lobe of Sheckman’s right lung. Because the cancer was detected early, however, Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center oncologist Rachael Rosovsky, M.D., M.P.H., and NSMC thoracic surgeon Dean Donahue, M.D., were able to work together on a treatment plan for Sheckman.
