- The Patient Family Advisory Council PFAC provides an opportunity for patients, families and the community to have input into patient care and safety programs at Salem Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham. We are committed to partnering with patients, families and community members to integrate their perspective into how care is delivered to patients. One initiative that stands out for me was the End of Life Care effort to promote “The Conversation,” a project dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care with their healthcare providers and family. Reviewed and provided feedback on the “Welcome to the Intensive Care Unit” pamphlet from the Critical Care Committee. Informational presentation on SO/GI Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity, “Caring for Transgender Patients at Salem Hospital”, and the Gender Affirming Inpatient Room Assignment policy.

- Coordinated Cancer Care Proves Powerful for Danvers Mom When I turned 50, my doctor told me it was time for a colonoscopy,” said House. “With no family history, no pain, and nothing unusual going on, I wasn’t really that concerned.” House had her colonoscopy in January 2010 at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Multidisciplinary care refers to close coordination among a team of cancer specialists and other clinicians, both in designing an initial treatment plan and throughout the care delivery process. A core component of multidisciplinary care is a tumor board where the specialists present and discuss a patient’s imaging scans, pathology, medical history, and other records together. We have found that the coordination of care really improves a patient’s cancer experience, and can elevate the standard of cancer care that we provide,” said Dr. Dias. “Coordinated care is an integral part of comprehensive cancer care, which involves physicians and patients working together to address the myriad issues affecting millions of cancer patients.”

- Enhancing Care for High-Risk Infants and their Families Paige was immediately transferred to NSMC’s Special Care Nursery, located on the Salem Campus, where physicians and nurses worked to stabilize her, placing a central line through her umbilicus to provide fluids and nutrition and a tube in her nose for oxygen. To better serve these patients, NSMC is planning an expansion and renovation of the Special Care Nursery, another step in the hospital’s ongoing enhancement of its inpatient experience. A centralized bedside monitoring system and a pneumatic tube station will facilitate faster and more accurate delivery of care. Looking back, Paige’s birth was the happiest saddest time of my life,” says Sherman. “It wasn’t the way it was supposed to be, but thanks to the expert and loving care we received at NSMC it turned out beautifully.”

To meet the growing demands of North Shore patients, provide a more therapeutic care environment and help reduce wait times in the Emergency Department, Salem Hospital will open an Acute Mental Health Unit AMU on Friday, October 28. This 16-bed unit will provide care for adult emergency behavioral health patients. The demand for behavioral health care has steadily increased over the past several years and this new unit increases the hospital’s capacity to meet that need. The unit will be staffed by mental health professionals working closely with colleagues in the hospital’s Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, which provides inpatient mental health care to pediatric, adult and senior patients.

By way of example, she cites the patient-centered rounding that currently takes place in the intensive care units and cardiac surgery unit; the new IPACE care model on Davenport 5 that centers around patient and family involvement; and the inclusion of patients on several process improvement teams. Another forum for members of the North Shore community to have a voice in the care delivery and safety programs at NSMC is the Patient Family Advisory Council PFAC. Among PFAC’s upcoming plans are a series of focus groups with residents of a local retirement community to gain an additional perspective on different aspects of care at NSMC. The first meeting will be about what it’s like to receive care in NSMC’s emergency department and how this experience could be improved.

- Arthur’s generosity will enable NSMC to build a state-of-the-art facility to provide much needed care to the children, adults and seniors of this region.” Last fall, NSMC broke ground on a $207 million project to consolidate hospital-based medical, surgical, behavioral health and emergency care on one campus in Salem. The facility will be aligned with Massachusetts General Hospital and add 24 new beds to the region for psychiatry and behavioral health care. He made his first major gift to the Medical Center in 2002, followed in 2007 by a $1 million donation in support of the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital together provide care at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers.
