- Coordinated Cancer Care Proves Powerful for Danvers Mom When I turned 50, my doctor told me it was time for a colonoscopy,” said House. “With no family history, no pain, and nothing unusual going on, I wasn’t really that concerned.” House had her colonoscopy in January 2010 at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Multidisciplinary care refers to close coordination among a team of cancer specialists and other clinicians, both in designing an initial treatment plan and throughout the care delivery process. A core component of multidisciplinary care is a tumor board where the specialists present and discuss a patient’s imaging scans, pathology, medical history, and other records together. We have found that the coordination of care really improves a patient’s cancer experience, and can elevate the standard of cancer care that we provide,” said Dr. Dias. “Coordinated care is an integral part of comprehensive cancer care, which involves physicians and patients working together to address the myriad issues affecting millions of cancer patients.”

The finalists were selected by a review committee based on how well they embody the characteristics of compassionate care, which include effective communication and emotional support, mutual trust and respect, involving patients and families in healthcare decisions, and tating patients as people, not just illnesses. - NSMC’s Birthplace is closely affiliated with the maternal-fetal medicine specialists at Massachusetts General Hospital MGH who specialize in caring for women who deliver early, such as Lopez. NSMC neonatologist Ihor Bilyk, M.D., stabilized the baby in the NSMC Special Care Nursery and within a couple of hours Matthew and mom were transferred to MGH so that Matthew could receive more advanced care and his mom could be with him. Matthew spent 99 days at the MGH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit NICU, where he was on a ventilator, received intense nutritional, occupational therapy and feeding team support, and required surgery for a congenital heart defect and hernia repair. After treatment at MGH, Matthew was transferred back to NSMC for continued care and observation prior to being sent home. Our neonatologists practice at both NSMC and MGH which allows for continuity of care, and provides the parents with some familiarity and comfort,” said NSMC Chief of Newborn Medicine Sanjay Aurora, M.D., M.P.H. “By transferring the patient back to the NSMC Special Care Nursery prior to going home we can more easily coordinate with LCHC physicians for a seamless discharge.”

- Since its launch five months ago, North Shore Medical Center’s TeleSANE program has successfully helped nearly a dozen victims of sexual assault in the greater Salem area receive higher-quality care. SANE Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner nurses are considered crucial when it comes to providing care to victims of sexual assault. In January, HAWC social worker Elisabeth Nash Wrenn, who helped bring the TeleSANE program to NSMC, said opening the center in Salem meant a “huge reduction in access barriers” when it came to victims being able to receive proper care after an assault. Hassan also stressed that the center is operating as usual — albeit with additional safety precautions — during the COVID-19 health crisis and encouraged victims not to hesitate to come in for care. In a separate interview, Salem mayor Kimberly Driscoll agreed that having the TeleSANE program in the city has been crucial in providing trauma-informed care for North Shore residents.
