- When a check-up with her primary care physician, Maury McGough, M.D., revealed a frightening diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia last summer, Cookie Melanson began receiving treatment at several hospitals within Partners HealthCare. This could have challenged the continuity and safety of her care, if not for a new form of electronic medical record EMR that followed her every step of the way. A Peabody-area realtor whose charity golf tournaments have raised more than $55,000 for NSMC’s Cancer Center programs since 2001, Melanson needed a specific type of chemotherapy for this rare cancer, as well as specialized cardiac care due to a heart attack she suffered in 2000. Unique expertise in this combination of care was readily available at Brigham and Women’s Hospital BWH, and Melanson’s trips into the city began. Melanson recuperated at Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital and her cancer care was put on hold.

- But the Burgers have not forgotten the care team that NSMC assembled to save their daughter’s life and have taken action to support a unique stress reduction program for pre-teen patients as a way of saying thanks. During her alarming decline, the Burgers consulted dozens of mental-health specialists and physicians trying to find a decisive diagnosis and appropriate care. We consider ourselves competent parents in terms of researching and finding care for our children,” says Todd, a management consultant and executive at a renewable energy company. “But in this case, we found it nearly impossible to find help no matter where we turned. Unable to provide the care needed, the hospital referred the Burgers to NSMC’s Inpatient Child Psychiatry Service. Dr. Bailey transferred his new patient to the pediatric emergency department at MassGeneral for Children at North Shore Medical Center and quickly pulled together a care team that included Jefferson Prince, M.D., Director of Child Psychiatry.

- When walkers and runners, families and friends, co-workers and neighbors gather at the Salem Willows on June 24 for the 22nd annual North Shore Cancer WALK and 3rd annual North Shore Cancer RUN, they will not only be showing their support for cancer patients and survivors but also helping to advance life-saving, world-class cancer care on the North Shore. This project follows the $50 million in improvements already made to the Salem Campus over the past four years supported by the successful $15 million Best Care, Right Place campaign, which concluded last spring. Located on the ninth floor of the Davenport Building, the inpatient oncology unit serves cancer patients who require specific forms of chemotherapy that can only be delivered in an inpatient setting or who need specialized care as a result of complications from chemotherapy. From diagnosis through treatment, cancer exacts a physical and emotional toll on patients,” says Dr. Weitzman. “While our current facilities allow us to provide effective clinical care, we saw a need to create a more comfortable, supportive environment that will make it easier for patients to focus on their health and well-being."

I have no family history of breast cancer and was shocked by the news,” says the 39-year-old. “I never thought this would happen to me because I have always taken care of myself by eating well and exercising.” The oncology experts at the Cancer Center offer a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care using the most advanced technology and latest research available. I want to help raise money for other patients who might be battling cancer so they can receive the same excellent care that I did at North Shore Medical Center and the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center,” says Donahue.

- Eric Checkoway of North Andover has a long history with his primary care physician, Maurice Greenbaum, M.D., which dates back to when he was a high school student living in Newburyport. Introduced by NSPG last year, the MDVIP Program is a new approach to primary care that offers patients more time with their primary care physician and a more comprehensive plan for achieving their health and wellness goals. When he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last year, Checkoway also learned how valuable that extra level of attention can be during a health crisis. “Not only did Dr. Greenbaum help nail down my diagnosis, he was also there quarterbacking my care during treatment and recovery,” says Checkoway. “He was in regular communication with my wife and me and all of the other doctors inv... Bonnie Polan, 60, of Danvers shares a similar sentiment for Brenda Minor, M.D., her NSPG primary care physician for more than a decade. The benefits of the concierge-style practice extend to the physicians as well. “I had thought about retiring and scaling back a bit, but now I can focus on providing care more thoroughly to a smaller number of patients,” says Dr. Minor. “It’s very invigorating at this point in my career to be able to invest so much time with my patients.”
