  • Through NSMC’s collaborative breast health program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Velluto was then scheduled to have a follow-up diagnostic examination done at the Breast Health Center at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. Within two weeks of her diagnosis, Velluto had her tumor removed at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care, followed immediately by a regimen of 33 daily radiation treatments. “I loved the team approach,” says Velluto. “It was very reassuring to know that all my doctors were working together on my behalf. And that I was able to find such amazing care so close to home.”

  • After the surgery, Kimball needed radiation treatments. “Life was way too hectic for me to go back and forth to Boston,” said Kimball. “I found the NSMC Cancer Center and realized I was getting the same quality of care, the same state-of-the-art technology, and it was just minutes from my house.” She says right away, the NSMC Cancer Center felt competent and caring. “The people at the Cancer Center are some of the nicest I have ever met,” she said. “In addition to providing the highest level of care, they are kind, loving, and they’re interested in you—not just as a patient but as a person.”

The experience underscored the value of NSMC’s collaboration with Mass General, enabling her to access the specific surgical expertise needed to treat her cancer and to call on colleagues to help care for her patients at the Mass Genera/North Shore Cancer Center in Danvers while she recovered.   • After he had dropped his children off, he pulled over and quickly called his wife who works in the Intensive Care Unit at NSMC Salem Hospital and told her, “I think I’m having a stroke.” Ron has now started taking care of another health issue. “I have sleep apnea, and I have the CPAP machine Continuous positive airway pressure machine; which keeps the airway open during sleep for it. Now I make sure that I use it everyday because I understand that it is important for me to take care of because sleep apnea can contribute to heart and blood vessel disease.” Ron is still active, jogging once or twice a week.

  • The device recall has had orthopedic surgeons the world over monitoring their patients carefully for any changes,” says Murzic. “Most patients will continue to do well, but a few, like Debra Geaney, will need revision surgery. Despite her complications, Geaney is grateful for the care she has received. “We’re really lucky to have such a great network of physicians locally.   • The non-profit organization of roughly 20 volunteer women, has been raising money for pediatric care at Salem Hospital since 1950. Funds raised in this year’s campaign will be allocated to pediatrics services, including psychiatry, the family resource center, special care nursery, and the Birthplace to purchase equipment, upgrade technology, renovate facilities, and sustain and expand vital programs and professional training. Over the past year, donated funds will be used to purchase breast pumps, hospital-grade refrigeration, ophthalmoscopes, and a NeoView neonatal intubation system, for the special care nursery and Birthplace.

  • While he shared that he is not great with business and numbers, he understands the power of philanthropy to transform ideas into reality to improve patient care. We were able to help them overcome their deepest, darkest moments and recover with care and attention. It would be great to enhance our multi-modal offerings and more personalized and integrated care. They also need more resources and tools to learn about nutrition and the role it plays in their overall health — how they need to eat well and take care of themselves physically, learn how to cook and some additional skills for independence.

  • From the Danvers Police Department, Danvers Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance Service who answered the call, to staff in the our Emergency Department, Operating Room OR, Intensive Care Unit ICU, Blood Bank and IV teams, as well as patient care staff, each played a critical role in saving Keith's life, since the kind of wound he sustained is life-threatening. He and Julia recently returned to the hospital to meet some of the team who provided care that day.
