Varicose veins
Varicose veins are very common. They are enlarged, twisted veins that most often occur in the legs, but can happen anywhere in the body. These veins can be uncomfortable and can cause pain, swelling, itching and can lead to more serious problems. Varicose veins happen near the surface of the skin, which can make them very noticeable, and are caused by increased blood pressure in the veins. Sometimes blood can collect in the veins as it is pumped throughout the body. This pooling of blood can cause the veins to become enlarged and over time. Many people with varicose veins experience a heavy burning or aching in the legs. Some also experience color changes in the skin, sores on the legs or a rash.
Treating varicose veins
The treatment process begins by taking an ultrasound of the veins. This ultrasound takes a clear two-dimensional photo of the veins which enables physicians to know exactly which vein is affected and the best treatment option to use. Today there are several minimally invasive treatment options for varicose veins, making treatment of the veins less painful.
