  • It’s terribly difficult for the patient and his or her family—but it works.” When a child develops an eating disorder, it takes the combined efforts of many to nurse them back to health,” says Dr. Prince. “It is important for the family to understand, accept and come to terms with this dangerous disorder. Then the family needs to connect with a team of healthcare professionals, usually including a pediatrician, nutritionist, psychologist and psychiatrist in order to treat all aspects of anorexia.” Dr. Prince’s continued support, along with the other caregivers he encouraged the family to access, ultimately helped their daughter get to a very healthy place—both physically and emotionally. We wanted to give something to NSMC that would both honor Dr. Bailey and Dr. Prince and directly benefit other families struggling with a pre-adolescent child,” says Deborah. “The Mindfulness program seemed like the perfect fit.”

  • Simmons’ doctors initially tested his family for a match, but none was found. Simmons’ name was placed on the national organ donor waiting list and his family also added their own recruitment efforts. They reached out through e-mail and encouraged family and friends to be tested. The donor is known by Simmons and his family but prefers to remain anonymous. And he continues to see his doctors at NSMC who consult and coordinate with his MGH team. “I know I’m lucky, but I owe that to my family, my donor and the great care I received,” said Simmons.

  • Care Decisions | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
  • One online resource, called The Conversation, is designed to help families start a conversation with loved ones about end-of-life care. Our Ethics Advisory Committee is always available for consultation with individuals and families facing patient care decisions. If you become unable to make decisions and you do not have advance directives in place, a family member or other person close to you may be asked to make decisions based on what they believe you would want. It's a good idea to discuss these matters with your doctor, with family members, and with the person you’ve named as your health care agent. A living will provides doctors, family members, and others close to a patient with written instructions describing the patient's views and choices about possible future medical treatment, including palliative care and organ donation.

  • Health Care Team | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
  • Hospitalists monitor a patient's progress, coordinate and consult with specialists, and stay in close touch with the patient, with members of the patient's family, and with the patient's primary care physician. Nurses will discuss with a patient the nature of his or her care, and where appropriate, also with family members. Case managers are experienced nurses and social workers who help patients and their families navigate the healthcare system and act as a liaison between the patient, physicians, caregivers and insurance providers. Case managers link patients and family members with community resources such as home-health visits, outpatient treatments, homemakers, meal delivery or medical transportation to ensure a safe transition home. Patients or families with questions or concerns may call the case management department at 978.354.4462 for Salem Hospital.

  • In her own words: Roxanne C. Ruppel | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
  • I grew up in a multicultural family, and there was a lot of richness in that. I was the first in my family to graduate from college. The journey they had coming to the U.S. and building a better life for their families has been an incredible example for me and taught me a lot of lessons. I have an incredibly supportive family, and I'm really grateful for it.

  • Kelly third from right with her family at the healing garden brick dedication at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. I have no family history of breast cancer and was shocked by the news,” says the 39-year-old. “I never thought this would happen to me because I have always taken care of myself by eating well and exercising.” Nearly two years after her initial cancer diagnosis, the mom of two is back to doing all the things that she loves to do with her family. Her fundraising goal for the WALK this past year was $5,000, which she far exceeded due to the generosity of family and friends, raising $10,000 for her team “Kickin’ it with Kelly.” And she’s already thinking about how she can exceed that in 2017, saying “It might be hard to beat that amount this year, but if I can beat cancer, it doesn’t seem so daunting!”
