  • Diversity and Disparities in Lynn: Among the hospital’s priority communities, residents ofLynn, Salem, and Peabody are more likely to experience inequities in the socialdeterminants of health and disproportionate risk for health and behavioral health concerns. However, several factors place Lynn residents most at-risk. Lynn has the lowest level ofeducational attainment and highest rates of unemployment and poverty. Lynn has thelowest home values, lowest proportion of homes with computers and internet access, andhighest rates of mortgage and rent-burden. Lynn is themost racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse of the hospital’s priority communities andis home to the greatest proportion of immigrants in the hospital’s service area.

  • Diversity and Disparities in Lynn: Of the eight communities in the hospital service area, Lynn is the most populous, has thelargest proportion of residents under 65, is the most racially/ethnically diverse, and is home to the largest proportion ofimmigrants and non-English speakers. Lynn has a larger proportion ofadults 25+ with less than a high school or equivalent degree. A larger proportion of Lynn residents live in rental housingthan in the other target communities. Lynn also has the highest proportionof households with cell phones but no other computer. Lynn also had the largest number of COVID-19 infections and the highest case rate in the area.

  • Community Farm Pilot Project holds groundbreaking at Mass General Brigham in Lynn The passion for food equity among Lynn advocates was on display Saturday for the Community Farm Pilot Program groundbreaking at the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center in Lynn. This important project is part of a citywide effort to address food insecurity in the local community. From 2019 to 2020, local food pantries in Lynn reported a 400 percent increase in demand, as many in the community lost jobs and income due to the COVID-19 health and economic crisis. A recent survey in the city, reported that one in five Lynn residents faced food insecurity at some time over the past year.   • North Shore Medical Center, Mass General Brigham join Lynn City Leaders to fight COVID-19 in hardest hit communities NSMC, Lynn Community Health Center and the City of Lynn partnered to offer COVID-19 testing at the Ingalls School in downtown Lynn. Pictured: NSMC staff Natasha Shah, M.D., left and Dierdre Smith-Horton, LICSW, distribute free care kits to local residents. To date more than 40,000 Care kits have been distributed to Lynn residents. NSMC is partnering with the City of Lynn to distribute an additional 15,000 kits in the upcoming weeks and with the Lynn Community Health Center to expand testing for area residents. These ads appear in Lynn as well as other communities and LCHC physician Carlos Cappas, M.D., Chief of Behavioral Health, is among the prominent community leaders featured in the campaign.

  • Programs being developed by the City of Lynn’s Food Security Task Force, Lynn Community Health Center, My Brother’s Table, Greater Lynn Senior Services, Salem State University School of Social Work, and North Shore Community Health will receive support to improve nutrition security, equity, mental health, chronic disease management, and workforce development. From 2019 to 2020, local food pantries in Lynn reported a 400 percent increase in demand for assistance, as many in the community lost jobs and income due to the COVID-19 health and economic crisis. To address this continuing crisis, a grant of $1.85 million will support an innovative plan being spearheaded by the Lynn Food Security Task Force -- a coalition of 14 Lynn organizations including the Lynn Community Health Center, My Brother’s Table, Greater Lynn Senior Services GLSS and other advocates. The facility will be centrally located in downtown Lynn where individuals and families can access healthy food and nutrition support on foot or by car. In addition to funding in Lynn, a Mass General Brigham grant of $500,000 has been awarded to North Shore Community Health NSCH, to enable the expansion of clinical space at the Peabody Family Health Center to include a walk-in urgent care clinic.

  • In addition to her work with the hospital, she is a Director at the Lynn Community Health Center where she serves on the Finance Committee and chairs the Audit Committee. She previously served as Chairperson and Trustee of Marian Court College, Vice President and Director of North Shore Elder Services, President and Director of the Swampscott Rotary Club and Director of the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce. Gargi Cooper, APRN-BC, is nurse practitioner at the Lynn Community Health Center and a leader in developing programs to provide comprehensive care services to homeless populations. She currently leads a novel program to provide primary and urgent care services to the homeless and underserved population in the city of Lynn, serving as medical director of the Recuperative Care Center/ Medical Outreach Program. Through this program, clients receive internal medicine care, health promotion, care management and counseling for acute and chronic illness, in settings that include local shelters, the street, the Lynn Community Health Center and single occupancy residences.

  • Lynn Food Hub Unveiled with $1.85 MIL Grant from Mass General Brigham: Officials also call it a “game-changer” for Salem Hospital patients LYNN & SALEM, MA – Infused by a 5-year, $1.85 million community health grant from Mass General Brigham, the Phoenix Food Hub officially opened Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in downtown Lynn. We are thrilled to support the creation of this crucial hub for the community of Lynn during a time when food insecurity is unfortunately on the rise. The Phoenix Food Hub is a collaborative project of the Lynn Food Security Task Force, spearheaded by Greater Lynn Senior Services and involving many organizations across the city. The Hub is conveniently located in the same space that houses the recently opened Lynn food pantry, operated and funded by the Boston nonprofit Catholic Charities, also a member of the Lynn Food Security Task Force.

  • Also included is a feature on a Lynn patient treated at the NSMC Heart Center, an update on the recently renovated Special Care Nursery and a story on a teen who learned valuable life skills working with NSMC pediatricians and adolescent psychiatrists. For more than a decade, Nicole Smith, 33, of Lynn suffered from what she thought were panic attacks. Also included is a feature on North Shore Urgent Care, which opened in Danvers this past October, and a story about Nicole Smith, a Lynn mother who had a life-changing cardiac ablation procedure performed in the NSMC Heart Center. Being taken to the right hospital at the right time was the difference between life and death for Lynn police officer Dave Fitzgerald. Bob Matthias, 55, of Lynn, arrived at NSMC's Emergency Department on a cold February night, all but unconscious.
