You’ll also read about our new outpatient facility in Lynn, designed to make it easy for residents in that community to access the care they use most, including urgent care, primary care, imaging and other services. The Healthy Life Winter 2017 - This issue features a Lynn man's highly successful weight loss through bariatric surgery he received at NSMC's Weight Management Program. Also included is a feature on a Lynn patient treated at the NSMC Heart Center, an update on the recently renovated Special Care Nursery and a story on a teen who learned valuable life skills working with NSMC pediatricians and adolescent psychiatrists. Also included is a feature on North Shore Urgent Care, which opened in Danvers this past October, and a story about Nicole Smith, a Lynn mother who had a life-changing cardiac ablation procedure performed in the NSMC Heart Center.

  • McKeon, an off-duty Lynn firefighter and paramedic, called the Lynn Fire dispatcher to send an ambulance, dragged Fitzgerald to the ground and started CPR. A police officer who heard the radio call arrived and helped with the CPR until the Lynn Fire ambulance arrived minutes later. Once he was home, he had an emotional reunion with McKeon, who was honored by the City of Lynn for saving the police officer. Five and a half months later, Fitzgerald returned to work patrolling Lynn’s Ward 1 neighborhood. “It was great to get back to work,” he said.

  • Less than a year after having her second hip replaced, Lynn Whitney is back on the move in a big way. Historically a very active person, Lynn loves skiing, kayaking, and water sports. It was over a 3-to-5-year period that Lynn, now 68, began to seek help for the increasingly debilitating pain she’d been living with, having been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both her hips and knees.

  • Being taken to the right hospital at the right time was the difference between life and death for Lynn police officer Dave Fitzgerald. Jill Joyce, 36-year-old Lynn science teacher, lived with back pain for fifteen years. For half her life, 28-year-old Stacey Floyd, a first-grade teacher from Lynn, tried various methods for treating her excessively long, painful menstrual periods. Mary Conlon had her first child at NSMC Union Hospital in 1953, and she and her family have been receiving care at the 150-bed community hospital in Lynn ever since.

  • Despite Doucette’s chemotherapy and radiation treatments, which took place five days a week for seven weeks in a row, Doucette rarely missed a day of work at his job as general manager of Lynn Ladder and Scaffolding Company. “The Cancer Center team helped minimize my treatment’s effects on my job and the rest of my life. I would show up at the Cancer Center at 7:10 a.m., and they’d have me in and out of radiation treatment and to work by 8:15,” he said. “I work for a small family-owned business that’s been in Lynn for 60 years. A speech and language pathologist from NSMC Union Hospital in Lynn and a registered dietitian based at the Cancer Center helped Doucette re-learn how to chew and swallow and to alter his diet accordingly.
