  • Concerned about future health issues and committed to making a positive lifestyle change, Dasilva met with his primary care physician, who referred him to NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program. Last January, Dasilva underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy surgery at NSMC Salem Hospital. During the hourlong procedure, approximately 80 percent of the stomach is removed and the remaining stomach remains connected to the intestines. Now in its sixteenth year, NSMC’s Surgical Weight Loss Program is the largest on the North Shore. We understand that this is a very difficult and scary time for expecting moms and families,” NSMC Birthplace Director Lisa Cavallaro, R.N., said. “We’re doing everything possible to ensure the safety of everyone who comes into the Birthplace. We are following all CDC guidelines, are screening all patients, visitors and staff, follow a NSMC-wide masking policy and have a limited visitor. Birthplace staff Karen Stevenson and Sue Nevins, R.N., supported and cheered Gabriela on, along with her family connected virtually, as she welcomed her new baby.

  • NSMC Program Has Aided In Prosecuting Sexual Assault Suspects This past January, the hospital partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to launch the North Shore’s first TeleSANE sexual assault treatment program, which virtually connects staff at the hospital’s facility with offsite, trauma-informed experts — including SANE nurses — using live video technology as they treat patients in real time. In January, HAWC social worker Elisabeth Nash Wrenn, who helped bring the TeleSANE program to NSMC, said opening the center in Salem meant a “huge reduction in access barriers” when it came to victims being able to receive proper care after an assault. Hassan said that the program has played a crucial role in guiding NSMC healthcare workers through the exam process in ways that prioritize the victim’s comfort while also ensuring evidence is collected accurately and efficiently.

  • Arthur Epstein Pledges $5 Million to NSMC, Largest Gift in Medical Center’s History North Shore Medical Center NSMC today announced that longtime Marblehead resident Arthur J. Epstein has committed a gift of $5 million to NSMC in support of the Medical Center’s plan to build a new behavioral health center at its Salem campus. They are seen at an event celebrating Epstein’s historic gift to NSMC. As part of this project, NSMC is converting the former Spaulding Hospital North Shore into a 90-bed facility dedicated to behavioral health.   • Brudnicks Put a Premium on Care at NSMC Originally scheduled to have surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital MGH in Boston, Brudnick decided to explore his options at NSMC after hearing glowing reviews of the care others had received through NSMC’s collaborative program with MGH. A tour of the NSMC Heart Center at Salem Hospital with cardiac surgeon Ann Toran, M.D. convinced him to stay local. But after viewing the Salem facility and meeting the surgeons, I knew that NSMC was the place for me." The success of his surgery, the smoothness of his recovery, and the ease for his family as he recuperated close to home underscored for Brudnick the value of having a health resource like NSMC on the North Shore.
