- A multidisciplinary team at North Shore Medical Center is collaborating to ensure that we are ready to respond if there is a need to test or provide care for patients with possible COVID-19 infection. Most cases of COVID-19 are mild, but some patients, in particular older people and those with underlying chronic medical conditions that may compromise immunity may be at higher risk for more severe outcomes. We have updated our screening protocols so that we may rapidly detect patients with possible COVID-19 infections. We are educating our providers about what to do if they are concerned a patient may have COVID-19. Our multidisciplinary team is meeting daily with experts from NSMC, Partners HealthCare, and local and state experts to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and shall remain safe.

- According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery ASMBS and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders IFSO patients with a body mass index BMI between 30 and 35 are eligible for surgery if they have weight related co-morbidities, such as Type 2 Diabetes. Patients with a BMI over 35 are candidates, even if they do not have weight related co-morbidities. - In her own words: Roxanne C. Ruppel | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
- I knew very early on that I wanted to take care of patients. I never thought I would do anything besides taking care of patients, but as is often the case in healthcare, somewhere along the way an opportunity comes up in management and leadership. I think that in healthcare leadership, the more you can do to stay close to that patient interface, the more gratifying the leadership role is. We have incredibly dedicated people across all job roles - our physicians, nurses and staff are so devoted to our patients and community. We're continuing to develop programs and expand the way we can serve patients, with those two purposes working in harmony with one another.

- As is the case with all of his spinal stenosis patients, Dr. Medlock initially took a conservative approach to Korumpas’s treatment, referring him to Kelly Pajela, M.D., one of three physiatrists who work in his Peabody practice. Surgery is always the last step in the treatment process, when we can no longer keep a patient comfortable by other means,” says Dr. Pajela. “My role with Dennis was to provide nonsurgical treatment options such as medication, physical therapy and teaching him how to modify his physical activities.” More than 80 percent of all patients who have this type of surgery will experience a significant improvement in their function and a markedly reduced level of pain and discomfort.
