  • During a bone density test, a technologist calculates the density of your bones using an X-ray scan. We use dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry DXA to conduct bone density tests. DXA uses two different X-ray beams to estimate bone density in your spine and hip. Since strong, dense bones allow less of the X-ray beam to pass through them, the DXA test compares the percentage of each X-ray beam blocked by bone and soft tissue.

  • Pediatricians at NSMC, who are also credentialed at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, were quick to order a chest X-ray and run an H1N1 test. The X-ray showed possible signs of pneumonia and the flu test came back positive. After another X-ray, and still no improvement in her condition, doctors decided she needed the attention of specialists at MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston. Tuesday morning the latest X-ray came back clear.

  • For more than 10 years she battled constant wheezing, horrible coughs, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. “It got so that I knew when it crossed from a cold into pneumonia and I’d go to my doctor or the emergency room for X-rays and medication,” says McPherson. During a particularly bad cold in the winter of 2005, McPherson went to the emergency room at Beverly Hospital to have a chest X-ray, which she knew would diagnose her latest bout with pneumonia. Upon reviewing her X-ray, the doctor treating her also ordered a CT scan of her chest and found a mass in her bronchi. However, he did offer her a ray of hope. “He said if there was anyone who could try to save my lung, it was NSMC’s Dr. Dean Donahue.”

  • Soon after Sister Burns' diagnosis, Dr. Roberts performed an angiogram, which is an X-ray test that uses a special dye and camera to take pictures of the blood flow in an artery. During the procedure, Dr. Roberts found the blocked artery and performed an angioplasty by inserting a thin catheter tube into Sister Burns’ radial artery in her wrist and maneuvering it into her heart with X-ray guidance.
