Hip and Knee
The Joint Center at Salem Hospital
Hip and knee pain can make everyday activities like walking and bending excruciating. As we age, certain types of arthritis can cause the cartilage in our joints to break down, causing pain and limiting mobility. The Joint Center at Salem Hospital is led by experts in hip and knee conditions, as well as total joint replacement, who can help patients get moving again and enjoying the things they love to do.

Initial Consultation for Hip and Knee Pain
Patients with hip or knee conditions will be evaluated by a member of our orthopedic team and receive a comprehensive exam, which may include diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRI or CT scans. Following the evaluation, our team will diagnose your condition and work with you to develop the optimal treatment plan.
Non-surgical Treatments for Hip and Knee Conditions
Certain conditions may be treated with non-surgical approaches, such as physical therapy, medication or injections. Our team of sports medicine, orthopedic and physical therapy experts specialize in the latest non-surgical techniques, helping many patients regain movement and live pain free.
Joint Preservation for Hip and Knees
The goal of joint preservation is to prevent injury, reduce inflammation and preserve cartilage. Our expert team offers a range of treatments including:
- Injections of hyaluronic acid or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation in the lining of the joints.
- Platelet-rich plasma and advanced biologic injections to stimulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation and promote healing.
- Cartilage transplant, where new cartilage grown from the patient's own cells is transplanted to repair damaged tissue.
Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery
For patients who require surgery to replace a damaged or deteriorated joint, our board-certified surgeons are trained in innovative approaches to hip and knee replacement surgery, including arthroscopic and robotic surgery. We offer several surgical options to address your specific needs:
- Partial joint replacement to replace only the damaged part of the joint, preserving as much of the original joint as possible.
- Total joint replacement to replace the entire joint with a prosthesis, providing a long-term solution for severe joint damage.
They use a variety of minimally invasive techniques and state-of-the-art approaches to cartilage and soft tissue repair.
Our surgical team works with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that will prepare you for surgery and ensure that you recover to your fullest potential. You will meet our total joint navigators, who will guide you through the process of planning for your surgery.
Same-Day (Outpatient) Hip and Knee Replacement
In some cases, same-day (outpatient) replacement surgery can be performed, allowing you to return home the same day of your surgery. For cases with more extensive damage, we may recommend total joint replacement surgery, such as total hip replacement.
Overnight (Inpatient) Hip and Knee Replacement
Patients who require an overnight stay at Salem Hospital for hip or knee replacement surgery will enjoy spacious, private rooms and free valet parking, among other amenities. Our staff on these inpatient units are highly experienced in caring for orthopedic patients.

Patient Story
Lynn Whitney
Hip Surgery
Less than a year after having her second hip replaced, Lynn Whitney is back on the move in a big way. Historically a very active person, Lynn loves skiing, kayaking, and water sports. It was over a 3-to-5-year period that Lynn, now 68, began to seek help for the increasingly debilitating pain she’d been living with, having been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both her hips and knees. She met with Charles Carrier, MD, a Mass General Brigham orthopedic surgeon in the North Shore Physicians’ Group at Salem Hospital.
