Weight Loss Surgery Boston

For weight loss surgery, Boston's Salem Hospital offers excellence and convenience.

Salem Hospital, a member of Mass General Brigham, has a Surgical Weight Management program that is one of the largest and most successful bariatric surgery programs in the region. Performing more than 200 procedures per year, our weight loss surgery physicians and clinical staff have a strong track record in helping severely obese patients lose a substantial amount of weight and improve their overall health. Our weight loss patients lose an average of 100 pounds during their first year after surgery, and also benefit from reduced co-morbidities such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease.

Located on the North Shore of Boston, our weight loss surgery program provides a convenient location where patients can receive exceptional care from highly skilled gastric bypass and gastric banding surgeons -- a great alternative to Boston bariatric surgery.

Is it right for me?

Patients considering weight loss surgery first undergo a full physical and mental evaluation to ensure they will be able to handle the emotional, physical and lifestyle changes resulting from the surgery. They meet with a gastric bypass or gastric band surgeon to discuss the several types of weight loss surgery available to them before settling on the approach that will likely have the best outcome.

Comprehensive post-operative care includes medically supervised exercise, nutritional counseling, stress management, as well as individual counseling and instruction on cardiovascular risk reduction.

Our weight loss surgery program offers three bariatric procedures.

Gastric bypass surgery shrinks the volume of the stomach by stapling off a small pouch of the top of the stomach and bypassing part of the small intestine. The gastric banding procedure shrinks the stomach by placing an inflatable band around it. Sleeve gastrectomy removes more than 85% of the stomach, leaving a long sleeve-shaped section. The result of each surgery is that patients feel full faster and do not feel hungry between meals.
