Day of surgery
Patients come into the office two to three weeks before the scheduled procedure to review pre-operative instructions and get a more detailed explanation of what to expect on the day of surgery and immediately following. During your visit you will have the opportunity to ask all your remaining questions before signing consent forms.
Pre-operative diet guidelines
Two weeks prior to your surgery, you will begin a pre-operative Liver Reduction Diet. Please open and download these 2 Week Pre-Operative Liver Reduction Diet Guidelines, which we will review with you and answer any questions.

Hospital admitting procedure
- You will be asked to change into a hospital gown and slippers. If you wear dentures, corrective lenses, or hearing aids you will be asked to remove them. Please bring your own containers for storing them.
- You will be asked to sign an operative consent form, even though you may already have done so at your surgeon’s office. Your signature indicates that the procedure has been explained to you, you understand it, and you have no further questions.
- Your blood pressure, pulse, respiration, oxygen saturation, temperature, height and weight will be measured.
- An intravenous (IV) line will be placed in your forearm. This allows fluids and/or medications to be delivered into your blood stream. You may also be given some medicine to help you relax. If you are having an open gastric bypass procedure, you may have an epidural catheter of anesthesia in the spine to block pain.
- You will be given a Heparin injection to help prevent blood clots. Compression boots will be applied to help with your lower extremity circulation and prevent clots.
- You may have a Patient Controlled Anesthesia (PCA) pump started before you wake up. This enables you to control your own pain medicine by pushing a button.
- Patients typically stay in the hospital one to two nights and then see their surgeon again seven to ten days after surgery.
