- October 1, 2012 started out like any another day at the office for orthopedic surgeon Doug Peterson, D.O. The North Shore native was seeing patients at his practice in Salem when he received a phone call that would change the course of his life for much of the year to follow. Working in a small medical facility on the base, Dr. Peterson and his team were focused on stabilizing combat-injured and critically wounded soldiers—of which there was a steady flow—and transferring them to hospitals with more advanced clinical capabilities. After medical school, he completed a fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, which gave him the opportunity to take care of a wide variety of patients and conditions. Having returned from his deployment in November 2013, Dr. Peterson is happy to be back on his home turf and seeing patients at North Shore Center for Orthopedic Surgery in Salem.

- Once a pulse was restored, they put him on monitors, inserted intravenous lines and gave him medications to stabilize his heart for the short ride to NSMC Salem Hospital. Within 44 minutes from Fitzgerald’s arrival at the hospital, Dr. Roberts inserted a thin tube into his heart and inflated a small balloon to open up the blocked artery that was causing the heart attack. Three days later, NSMC and Massachusetts General Hospital cardiac surgeon Ann Toran, M.D., performed a quadruple bypass to restore proper blood flow in his heart. After his release from the hospital, Fitzgerald enrolled in NSMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, where he fine-tuned his diet, built up his strength and endurance through supervised walking and weight training, and learned better ways to deal with stress. We were so lucky that John saw Dave and started CPR so quickly,” said Tracie Fitzgerald, Dave’s wife. “And on top of that, we were fortunate to be so close to NSMC Salem Hospital, where they could perform the angioplasty and cardiac surgery right there.

- In October 2013, after having her annual mammogram at the NSMC Women’s Center in Danvers—something she has done faithfully since her 30s—Velluto received a call from the office of North Shore Medical Center radiologist Kevin Callahan, M.D., asking her to come back in for another test because he saw something on her exam that he was concerned about. This year, Velluto’s screening mammography exam was conducted using tomosynthesis*, or 3-D mammography, a breakthrough technology that was developed by experts at Massachusetts General Hospital and is offered at both NSMC Salem Hospital and the NSMC Women’s Center. Through NSMC’s collaborative breast health program with Massachusetts General Hospital, Velluto was then scheduled to have a follow-up diagnostic examination done at the Breast Health Center at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. The Mass General/North Shore Breast Health Center and the Breast Health Center sites at NSMC Salem Hospital, NSMC Union Hospital, NSMC Women’s Center and Cape Ann Medical Center are accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiology Control Program and the American College of Radiology.

- During a particularly bad cold in the winter of 2005, McPherson went to the emergency room at Beverly Hospital to have a chest X-ray, which she knew would diagnose her latest bout with pneumonia. Dr. Donahue, a thoracic surgeon who practices at both Massachusetts General Hospital and NSMC, soon explained the complexities of the procedure to McPherson. She didn’t want him or her three younger daughters to worry about her. “Though I was initially frightened, Dr. Donahue and his nurse Julie Garrity, R.N., and the whole office staff reassured me at every turn. After the eight-hour surgery and three days at NSMC Salem Hospital, McPherson went home to recover. Now breathing easy, McPherson is walking up to six miles a week without difficulty. “When I told friends about my cancer, they immediately expected that I was going to go to one of the big hospitals in Boston for treatment,” says McPherson. “But Dr. Donahue is MGH and he brought Boston to me.
