- Back and spine patients typically begin their treatment plan by meeting with one of our physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians to evaluate whether non-surgical treatment options, such as physical therapy, medication, or injections can provide relief. They work with patients to provide the safest and most effective care and collaborate to provide up-to-date treatment approaches. Patients having back and spine surgery are cared for in our state-of-the-art surgery center and most go home from the hospital the same day. Those patients who require an overnight stay will enjoy spacious, private rooms at Salem Hospital with staff who are specially trained to care for orthopedic and spine patients. All of our surgical patients enjoy free valet parking and other amenities.

- They are led by a RD and cover lifestyle, nutrition, and behavioral strategies to help patients prepare for a safe and successful surgery. Patients will be enrolled in these classes following their initial consultation with the RD. If any patient is struggling with making changes to their eating patterns, or if a patient experiences emotional distress, anxiety, depression, or other challenges, our physicians and clinical staff may refer patients for cognitive behavioral therapy through our Outpatient Mental Health services.

- The gynecologic surgeons at Minimally Invasive Gynecology Surgery program employ a variety of endometrial ablation techniques, depending on each individual patient's specific needs. All of these procedures are performed while the patient is anesthetized to ensure that she remains comfortable throughout. If anesthesia was received in the operating room, the patient will be taken to the recovery room for observation. Once blood pressure, pulse and breathing are stable and the patient is alert, she is discharged home. If an ablation was performed in the office, the patient can go home about 30 minutes after the procedure is complete.

- Tilt table, which helps diagnose why a patient may be experiencing fainting spells. The tilt table actually produces a fainting spell, or syncope, under controlled circumstances, allowing physicians to determine whether the patient has a condition known as vasovagal syncope. Patients requiring cardiac surgery have the procedure done at Mass General, while all other aspects of post-operative care are provided through the Heart Center, including any necessary ongoing evaluation. Angioplasty – the quickest method for opening blocked arteries in patients suffering a heart attack. We provide a range of clinical programs to help patients and their families manage their recovery from cardiac surgery.

- After completing an in-depth interview about her medical and family history, her likes and dislikes including favorite colors and music, she met with certified hypnotist Karen Pischke, R.N., B.S.N. 978.741.4151. “The more we can learn about what appeals to a patient, the more we can individualize the hypnosis,” explained Pischke. The preliminary results of the study, led by Faysal Hasan, M.D., medical director of NSMC’s smoking cessation program, showed that patients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be non-smokers at six months compared with patients using nicotine replacement therapy alone or patients who quit “cold turkey.” “This study suggests that hypnotherapy can be very us... - SALEM, MA – Salem Hospital dedicated a new sculpture on its grounds Thursday, commemorating patients and families who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and honoring its heroic healthcare workers who cared for the community during this historic and extremely difficult time. When the world was facing fears, and so much uncertainty about exactly what we were dealing with, this team…rose up with compassion, courage and such a dedication to care for patients,” said president and chief operating officer Roxanne Ruppel, “I hope this space, and these sculptures really instill pride in what were able to do together.” In response, several medical units were converted to COVID ICUs to care for the sickest patients, outpatient COVID clinics and testing centers were created, while robust community outreach services were put into place to support prevention, care and vaccination efforts. Salem Hospital was also the site of Mass General Brigham's first COVID sub-unit expressly for mental health patients and their unique needs. Patient and survivor John Akatyszewski, the owner of Ziggy's Donuts in Salem and Peabody, graciously donated refreshments as part of the dedication.

- All patients who are considering bariatric surgery receive a multidisciplinary consultation at the start of the process. The consultation is a thorough medical and psychological assessment, which may result in the patient deciding to enroll in our non-surgical or surgical management programs. All decisions about patient care are made collaboratively with the patient, the Weight Management team and the referring physician. This consultation takes place only after a patient has attended one of our information sessions Patient are sometimes referred for additional medical testing, such as a stress test or a sleep study.

- Follow up care includes continuous evaluation of treatment, and educational materials for patients, caregivers and family. Our WOC nurses are nationally certified and specialize in working with patients before and after ostomy surgery. They help patients improve and optimize their quality of life by providing educational resources and ongoing clinical support. A physician may refer a patient to a WOC nurse to help him or her learn how to care for themselves, or to assist them in becoming comfortable with the type of surgical procedure they had. Our nurses are here to serve as a resource to any concerns and questions from ostomy patients.
