  • To meet the high standards of MBSAQIP, the NSMC Bariatric Program met essential criteria for staffing, training and facility infrastructure and protocols for care, ensuring its ability to support patients with severe obesity. Accredited bariatric surgery centers provide not only the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of severely obese patients, but also the support and resources that are necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients, from the pre-hospital phase through the post-operative care and treatment process. The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice and to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient. To meet the growing demands of North Shore patients, provide a more therapeutic care environment and help reduce wait times in the Emergency Department, Salem Hospital will open an Acute Mental Health Unit AMU on Friday, October 28. This 16-bed unit will provide care for adult emergency behavioral health patients. The demand for behavioral health care has steadily increased over the past several years and this new unit increases the hospital’s capacity to meet that need. The unit will be staffed by mental health professionals working closely with colleagues in the hospital’s Epstein Center for Behavioral Health, which provides inpatient mental health care to pediatric, adult and senior patients.

  • Arthur’s generosity will enable NSMC to build a state-of-the-art facility to provide much needed care to the children, adults and seniors of this region.” Last fall, NSMC broke ground on a $207 million project to consolidate hospital-based medical, surgical, behavioral health and emergency care on one campus in Salem. The facility will be aligned with Massachusetts General Hospital and add 24 new beds to the region for psychiatry and behavioral health care.
