  • After completing an in-depth interview about her medical and family history, her likes and dislikes including favorite colors and music, she met with certified hypnotist Karen Pischke, R.N., B.S.N. 978.741.4151. “The more we can learn about what appeals to a patient, the more we can individualize the hypnosis,” explained Pischke. • In her own words: Roxanne C. Ruppel | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
  • I knew very early on that I wanted to take care of patients. I never thought I would do anything besides taking care of patients, but as is often the case in healthcare, somewhere along the way an opportunity comes up in management and leadership. I think that in healthcare leadership, the more you can do to stay close to that patient interface, the more gratifying the leadership role is. We have incredibly dedicated people across all job roles - our physicians, nurses and staff are so devoted to our patients and community. We're continuing to develop programs and expand the way we can serve patients, with those two purposes working in harmony with one another.

We have updated our screening protocols so that we may rapidly detect patients with possible COVID-19 infections. We are educating our providers about what to do if they are concerned a patient may have COVID-19. Our multidisciplinary team is meeting daily with experts from NSMC, Partners HealthCare, and local and state experts to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and shall remain safe.

  • Salem Hospital Celebrates 150 Years | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
  • All these historical events from 150 years ago have a legacy that continues today, but there's one that stands out for the North Shore: when Salem Hospital first opened its Charter Street doors to patients on Oct. 1, 1874, thanks to a gift from Captain John Bertram. The staff has been here a long time and is committed to caring for patients as if they're a family member. If you're a doctor or nurse at Salem Hospital, you know that you're likely to run into this patient at the grocery store or your kids will go to school together. The generational phenomenon is true of patients as well. Suzanne calls it "grandma syndrome," as she has cared for the newborns of children who were her patients - back when they were babies themselves.

  • As is the case with all of his spinal stenosis patients, Dr. Medlock initially took a conservative approach to Korumpas’s treatment, referring him to Kelly Pajela, M.D., one of three physiatrists who work in his Peabody practice. Surgery is always the last step in the treatment process, when we can no longer keep a patient comfortable by other means,” says Dr. Pajela. “My role with Dennis was to provide nonsurgical treatment options such as medication, physical therapy and teaching him how to modify his physical activities.” More than 80 percent of all patients who have this type of surgery will experience a significant improvement in their function and a markedly reduced level of pain and discomfort.
