Located in a brand-new building on the Dove Avenue side of our Salem campus, the facility has 65 spacious patient bays enclosed by sliding glass doors that enhance privacy for important patient-caregiver conversations. “It will be a wonderful environment for patients,” Federico says. - The bi weekly appointments typically have four patients or more and start with a five-minute orientation about the plan for the appointment. All patients sign a confidentiality agreement not to share information about other patients. A medical assistant takes the blood pressure readings of all patients and then Dr. Parseghian reviews each patient’s case, asking and answering questions. Then the doctor or nutritionist educates the group about a specific subject and the patients share tips or challenges. Meeting on a monthly basis, the committee has been involved in a variety of projects to date, including the creation of a medication safety brochure and a new website offering information on patient safety and other related topics. - Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is self-administered by the patient using a mask inhaler giving them complete control during labor. A patient simply takes a few breaths of the nitrous oxide at the beginning of a contraction to help alleviate the pain, and within a minute it leaves her system. Unlike an epidural, nitrous oxide can be administered within minutes of a patient choosing to use it. Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients early in labor before they get an epidural, for patients who do not want an epidural or for patients who are too close to delivery to get an epidural. In addition to having little to no side effects on the patient or baby, nitrous oxide also allows patients more opportunity for movement during the delivery process.

- SALEM–Salem Hospital has received approval from the Department of Public Health to add 24 private patient rooms, netting the hospital an additional 13 medical-surgical beds, and improving the patient experience. Offering more private rooms is a significant improvement in our patients’ experience,” said David J. Roberts, MD, President of Salem Hospital. “The additional space enables us to admit patients more quickly from the emergency rooms and cuts down on wait times. It also enables us to convert our few remaining four-bed rooms into double rooms and provide more privacy for our patients and their visitors.” Data from Salem Hospital shows the length of stay for admitted patients has increased since the onset of the pandemic, suggesting that those requiring inpatient care are sicker than they were previously. Patients who deferred care, particularly preventative care, are arriving at the hospital with more serious illnesses and therefore are occupying beds longer.
