  • Every Friday morning, Brenda Minor, M.D., a primary care physician with North Shore Physicians Group NSPG, laces up her sneakers and joins a group of patients at the Northshore Mall or a nearby park for their weekly “Walk with a Doc” walking club. Patient appointments run no less than 30 minutes and often last an hour so that patients can discuss their medical concerns in more complexity. Patients and physicians describe MD VIP in this video: I see this as an investment in my health,” says Danvers resident Burnett Crateau, a longtime patient of Dr. Minor and a member of the walking club. “The health assessment I received at my physical made it well worth the expense, and then on top of that, I’ve been happily surprised with the extra group activities. This latter point, Dr. Szymanski says, is important to emphasize in today’s increasingly complex healthcare environment. “As part of this program, we will oversee each patient’s care across the entire continuum, whether it’s a consultation with a specialist, a hospital visit, home care or rehab,” he explains. “We will act as the single point of contact for other caregivers and fam...

  • We are thrilled, but not surprised, by this outpouring of community investment, led by the visionary philanthropy of the Davenport family,” said Roxanne Ruppel, president and chief operating officer. “Taken together, these gifts will enable Salem Hospital to provide the best possible care across our community, treating each patient holistically. There has been a well-documented rise in the demand for behavioral health services in recent years, leaving health care systems straining to meet wide-ranging patient needs. By expanding this capacity, patients can be managed in practices that specialize in mental health care, rather than in busy Emergency Departments, inpatient units, and primary care offices. The psychiatric team works collaboratively with the medical team to more quickly address mental illness and care for patients more holistically, leading to better outcomes. Thanks to the Davenport Fund Committee and all our supporters, Salem Hospital is well positioned to provide truly integrated and holistic care to our patients in an area of critical need.”

  • Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is self-administered by the patient using a mask inhaler giving them complete control during labor. A patient simply takes a few breaths of the nitrous oxide at the beginning of a contraction to help alleviate the pain, and within a minute it leaves her system. Unlike an epidural, nitrous oxide can be administered within minutes of a patient choosing to use it. Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients early in labor before they get an epidural, for patients who do not want an epidural or for patients who are too close to delivery to get an epidural. In addition to having little to no side effects on the patient or baby, nitrous oxide also allows patients more opportunity for movement during the delivery process.
