Special Care Nursery

Mother laughing with her young twin daughters

The centerpiece of our neonatology program is the Special Care Nursery, a Level II B facility for newborns. The nursery is designed to care for babies who are premature or require additional care beyond what can be provided at the mother's bedside.

Our close medical and nursing collaboration with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital ensures that your baby receives the most advanced approach to infant care and access to expert neonatologists and pediatric specialists. We offer the latest technology to promote your baby's health, growth and progress. Tel: 978.354.3314

Private, spacious rooms, flexible accommodations

Parents are involved in every step of the care their little one receives and are always welcome in the nursery. Our highly trained staff will teach you how to best support your baby's recovery, growth and development. We offer private, spacious rooms, many able to accommodate twins. We also offer flexible accommodations for parents to room with their baby or nearby. Free meals are included for mothers rooming with their babies. We also offer designated parking conveniently located near the entrance. To schedule a tour, please call 978-354-3354.

Welcoming babies born in Boston

We welcome infants to the special care nursery whose families desire care closer to home on the North Shore. Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Tufts Medical Center Floating Hospital for Children, Boston Medical Center and many others commonly transfer infants living locally to our special care nursery to continue care until they are ready for discharge home.

Advanced specialty care

Our close medical and nursing collaboration with the NICUs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital ensures the most advanced approach to infant care. Should your child need advanced specialty care, local specialists and specialists from Mass General for Children see our smallest patients on our Salem campus, or at the Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center in Danvers.

Babies requiring the most specialized care will be placed in our state-of-the-art baby isolette, the BabyLeo®. Inside the BabyLeo®, the air and mattress are warmed to provide minute-to-minute temperature and humidity regulation for even the smallest of babies. The BabyLeo® enables parents to connect with their babies through touch and sound. Families can play soft music and voice recordings to their baby through BabyLeo’s audio system. The bed also includes an in-line scale, so families are able to monitor their baby’s growth over time. Our deepest thanks to the Merry Mixers for their donation of the BabyLeo®.

Our nursery is one of the few in the area that offers advanced respiratory support including CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). CPAP therapy is beneficial for premature babies who have trouble maintaining good oxygen levels in their blood and helps our small patients breath easier.

Skin-to-skin contact

Skin-to-skin contact has been shown to help premature babies regulate their body temperature and normalize heart and breathing rate more quickly.  They grow and transition faster, and sleep more peacefully. We schedule kangaroo care visits around feeding time.   Learn more
