  • The hospital admitted its first patient on October 1, 1874 – a 28-year-old pregnant woman who had accidently fallen into a kettle of boiling water. Hospital records show she remained a patient for three months after suffering burns to her arms and abdomen. As we have since that first day, the team at Salem Hospital healed, comforted, and sent a patient home to loved ones. That is an incredible legacy,” said president and chief operating officer Roxanne Ruppel. “This story reminds us of our shared purpose and how important we are to the patients and families in this community. Now, it conducts surgeries on patients using robots and sends them home the same day.

  • In her own words: Roxanne C. Ruppel | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
  • I knew very early on that I wanted to take care of patients. I never thought I would do anything besides taking care of patients, but as is often the case in healthcare, somewhere along the way an opportunity comes up in management and leadership. I think that in healthcare leadership, the more you can do to stay close to that patient interface, the more gratifying the leadership role is. We have incredibly dedicated people across all job roles - our physicians, nurses and staff are so devoted to our patients and community. We're continuing to develop programs and expand the way we can serve patients, with those two purposes working in harmony with one another.
