- Located on the ninth floor of the Davenport Building, the inpatient oncology unit serves cancer patients who require specific forms of chemotherapy that can only be delivered in an inpatient setting or who need specialized care as a result of complications from chemotherapy. Ray Levesque of Saugus is one of those patients. From diagnosis through treatment, cancer exacts a physical and emotional toll on patients,” says Dr. Weitzman. “While our current facilities allow us to provide effective clinical care, we saw a need to create a more comfortable, supportive environment that will make it easier for patients to focus on their health and well-being." As part of the renovation, the inpatient oncology unit’s six private patient rooms will be redesigned to include family space for overnight stays. He recently spent a few days in NSMC’s recently renovated Phippin Building following a knee replacement and describes the patient rooms there as “spectacular.”

- SALEM, MA – Salem Hospital dedicated a new sculpture on its grounds Thursday, commemorating patients and families who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and honoring its heroic healthcare workers who cared for the community during this historic and extremely difficult time. When the world was facing fears, and so much uncertainty about exactly what we were dealing with, this team…rose up with compassion, courage and such a dedication to care for patients,” said president and chief operating officer Roxanne Ruppel, “I hope this space, and these sculptures really instill pride in what were able to do together.” In response, several medical units were converted to COVID ICUs to care for the sickest patients, outpatient COVID clinics and testing centers were created, while robust community outreach services were put into place to support prevention, care and vaccination efforts. Salem Hospital was also the site of Mass General Brigham's first COVID sub-unit expressly for mental health patients and their unique needs. Patient and survivor John Akatyszewski, the owner of Ziggy's Donuts in Salem and Peabody, graciously donated refreshments as part of the dedication.

- In her own words: Roxanne C. Ruppel | Salem Hospital | Mass General Brigham
- I knew very early on that I wanted to take care of patients. I never thought I would do anything besides taking care of patients, but as is often the case in healthcare, somewhere along the way an opportunity comes up in management and leadership. I think that in healthcare leadership, the more you can do to stay close to that patient interface, the more gratifying the leadership role is. We have incredibly dedicated people across all job roles - our physicians, nurses and staff are so devoted to our patients and community. We're continuing to develop programs and expand the way we can serve patients, with those two purposes working in harmony with one another.

- Unfortunately we see many cases like Sister Burns', said NSMC Chief of Cardiology David Roberts, M.D. "Symptoms can mask themselves as something minor that patients often ignore." By entering through a patient’s wrist instead of the groin area, the patient recovers faster, has less pain and there is a much smaller risk of bleeding and major complications,” said Dr. Roberts. After the procedure, a patient can stand immediately and may even go home that same day. Patients who undergo a radial artery catheterization require nothing more than a Band-Aid on their wrist. To keep Sister Burns’ heart strong and to help her recover, she has joined NSMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which teaches cardiac patients about healthy eating, stress management and how to create and maintain an exercise program.
