After the procedure, a patient can stand immediately and may even go home that same day. Patients who undergo a radial artery catheterization require nothing more than a Band-Aid on their wrist. To keep Sister Burns’ heart strong and to help her recover, she has joined NSMC’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which teaches cardiac patients about healthy eating, stress management and how to create and maintain an exercise program.

- A multidisciplinary team at North Shore Medical Center is collaborating to ensure that we are ready to respond if there is a need to test or provide care for patients with possible COVID-19 infection. Most cases of COVID-19 are mild, but some patients, in particular older people and those with underlying chronic medical conditions that may compromise immunity may be at higher risk for more severe outcomes. We have updated our screening protocols so that we may rapidly detect patients with possible COVID-19 infections. We are educating our providers about what to do if they are concerned a patient may have COVID-19. Our multidisciplinary team is meeting daily with experts from NSMC, Partners HealthCare, and local and state experts to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and shall remain safe.

- Located on the ninth floor of the Davenport Building, the inpatient oncology unit serves cancer patients who require specific forms of chemotherapy that can only be delivered in an inpatient setting or who need specialized care as a result of complications from chemotherapy. Ray Levesque of Saugus is one of those patients. From diagnosis through treatment, cancer exacts a physical and emotional toll on patients,” says Dr. Weitzman. “While our current facilities allow us to provide effective clinical care, we saw a need to create a more comfortable, supportive environment that will make it easier for patients to focus on their health and well-being." As part of the renovation, the inpatient oncology unit’s six private patient rooms will be redesigned to include family space for overnight stays. He recently spent a few days in NSMC’s recently renovated Phippin Building following a knee replacement and describes the patient rooms there as “spectacular.”

State-of-the-art care is provided for patients with respiratory failure and multi-system diseases. The Cardiac Surgical Unit at the Heart Center was an 8 bed unit providing acute and post acute cardiac surgical care for adult patients.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy saturates the patient’s circulatory system with oxygen enabling more oxygen-rich blood to reach the tissues.

- Tilt table, which helps diagnose why a patient may be experiencing fainting spells. The tilt table actually produces a fainting spell, or syncope, under controlled circumstances, allowing physicians to determine whether the patient has a condition known as vasovagal syncope. Patients requiring cardiac surgery have the procedure done at Mass General, while all other aspects of post-operative care are provided through the Heart Center, including any necessary ongoing evaluation. Angioplasty – the quickest method for opening blocked arteries in patients suffering a heart attack.
