- Bringing together experts in vascular surgery, interventional radiology, hyperbaric therapy and wound care, the Center offers treatments for a wide range of circulatory problems to help patients resume physical activities, slow or stop the progression of vascular disease and reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke. Many patients can alleviate symptoms with simple lifestyle changes such as exercise and improved diet. To help patients suffering from Peripheral Artery Disease PAD—a narrowing of the peripheral arteries, most commonly in the legs, but also in the stomach, arms, or head—NSMC recently launched a comprehensive, physician-supervised program. This service gives patients practical guidance and treatment options, including exercise therapy, to reduce the cramping and muscle pain caused by PAD and improve their quality of life. We’re excited about the many ways our expanded service will benefit our patients.”

- Today, patients at the Mass General/ North Shore Cancer Center have their tumors screened for many types of cancer to determine their genotype, or genetic “fingerprint.” This genetic intelligence is then used to match the appropriate “smart drug” that is specifically crafted to interrupt the cancer-causing mechanism, with minimal side effects, to the specific genetic mutation. O’Beirne is one of many patients who is benefitting from the comprehensive care and world-class research provided at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center. She is now enrolled in a clinical research trial evaluating the effectiveness of an existing EGFR-mutation “smart drug” that had previously proven effective in shrinking tumors in patients with advanced metastatic cancer. In O’Beirne’s trial, researchers are evaluating whether the drug—Tarceva— can prevent the recurrence of lung cancer in patients at an earlier stage of the disease.

- For some patients, this approach reduces the risk of complications and long-term side effects that can be associated with traditional gastric bypass surgery. For our patients, surgery is the beginning, not the end,” says NSMC director of bariatric weight loss surgery Bernard Benedetto, M.D. “Every pound lost requires a great deal of hard work, and our program is distinguished by our commitment to ensuring long-term success through active education, monitoring and engagement.” Our patients often come to us after suffering many years of damage to their health as well as frustration, stress and fear of failure,” says Dr. Benedetto, dispelling the notion of weight loss surgery as a vanity project or an easy way out. “There is nothing more rewarding for us as caregivers than helping them become the people they want to be.”

- The program has helped hundreds of patients learn more about natural cures for heart disease, such as stress management, exercise and nutrition. Patients can, however, attend as many meetings as needed to successfully make changes as they seek. NSMC’s 12-week Cardiac Rehabilitation Program teaches patients about heart health, exercise, nutrition and stress management skills to help patients more fully recover from a heart attack or surgery and adopt strategies to help live a more heart-healthy lifestyle. Healing Your Heart picks up where Cardiac Rehab leaves off for patients who need more peer support," said Dr. Zarren. In each class, patients begin with a process of centering and finding a focus to let go of the stresses of the outside world and to focus on being present, in the moment.
